Hello All

Post by AZNGW Rider »

Hi Group.
I just bought a 1976 Goldwing GL-1000 and am finding out it will need more fixing than I thought. It feels good though to have one again since I bought a 1977 GL-1000 when it was two years old and had it for five years till I ended up selling it in order to transfer clear across the country when I was in the Navy.
Back then mine didn't need much repair since it was so new but with my new acquisition I need to do a lot of work on it since it is an antique now. Hope I can gain enough insight from this board into the mechanicals of the machine in order to fix it properly. Any help or advice is welcome.

OK, I totally misread your Bubblehead comment. I thought you were calling me a Bubblehead as a friendly rebuke.
So, first I dont know what a bubble head is in Naval parlance. And second I've never served in any uniform. Just a retired engineer working as a civilian in the US Army's research facilities.
So...now I get it you were identifying your boat or vessel and your work classification.
God I'm slow to catch on.
You can school me if you wish im ok with it.

Nuc. One boat USS Von Steuben SSBN632 (Blue) 10 patrols '75 - '79. Glad I did it, wouldn't want to do it again in today's Navy. Got out and got the job I wanted without going to college to get the degree for it. Married a little over a year after I got out to a High School classmate. Blessed.

77GOWING, there is a difference between a Bubblehead (submarine qualified Navy) and just any swabbie. A lot of pride goes with the dolphins we wear, and a little bit of crazy.

Thanks for the information. Being a sub crewman is not for the timid as I understand.
One of my best friends is a retired Naval commander. Served on an aircraft carrier.

Take care.

I was on the USS Henry L. Stimson SSBN 655 (Gold) in Charleston about the same years (1976-1980) you were on the Von Steuben. I think I knew someone from the Von Steuben back in the day.Went home one off crew and met a classmate that I did not know during school years and we got married a year later.

I knew a Richard Brittingham (Brit) that I think was on the Stimson (don't know the crew). We tended bar together in Norfolk before transfer to boats and I stayed at his house for a month or two between my 1st and 2nd patrols. I'll advise you that if your boat has a reunion GO TO IT! They are a blast! The chiefs don't look any older (they were already ancient - in their 30's!)

I found out in recent years that the Henry L. was having reunions so I went to one in Charleston in 2016 and another in Oklahoma City in 2018. This year (if it goes through due to the Corona) is in Cincinnati but not sure if I can make it. Have not received word about my other two boats having reunions.

We had a NavET that we called Brit but I think that was his name instead of Brittingham (was so long ago I could be wrong).
