hi there! new guy here, fiddling with a neglected 82 interstate, and trying to go naked
I picked up this gl1100 about a month ago. It's been a bit rocky, in getting it up and running. I'm currently waiting on another starter motor. This'll be the 2nd one I've bought lol. I had it running pretty good until I gave the underside a pressure wash, and now it wont start up.
I live out in Montgomery, Tx. If there are any local goldwing gurus out in this area, I sure would appreciate a hand.
wiring is my biggest fear. I've had a few people suggest I make my own wire harness, but yeah, no. lol. the part that confuses me is where the fairing plugged in, there's about a dozen or so wires that go back into the main harness and into the headlight/turn signals. I'm also replacing the large dash with a smaller speedo that has built in idiot lights. I don't think that will be much trouble to install once I am able to clean up the main harness and the fairing dongle.
Aside from electrical stuff, I've been waiting on a st1300 master cylinder that has been delayed by the freeze, a newer radiator, since the one that came with the bike had a leak, rear shocks, and fork seals.
I'm also not sure if the engine has a blown gasket or something that would cause the coolant to mix with the oil. I pulled the valve covers off the other night and saw some very light colored oil. IDK if that could be due to age, or possibly mixed with coolant. I'm hoping its just very old oil. When it did run, the bike sounded pretty awesome.

Welcome from Wisconsin. Check out the 'new 2 you' link in my signature for some great pointers and answers to frequently asked questions.
As far as the wiring goes, if the bike had the stock Honda fairing, the wiring for it is just a sub- harness, and just unplugs from the main harness behind the headlight. For extra assistance, go to ShopTalk, and find the downloadable wiring diagrams for your bike. It will make it much easier!
Just an FYI, the water pump is a known weak spot on these bikes, especially if it sat for an extended period of time... if the pump seals are bad, it's possible for antifreeze and oil to mix.

welcome to our corner of the interweb.
If you haven't yet..chance the timing belts..you will be in there if you have to change the water pump.
If you do swap the water pump be sure to replace the washers on the 3 screws that mount the water pump to the transmission cover. If you re use the old ones you may have an oil leak into the cooling passages..ask me how I know.

Welcome to the 'Wingdom.
Another way to get water in the oil is a head gasket ... also not unusual after a long nap ... not as daunting on these bikes as it is in some others ... the heads are hanging right out there in the breeze ...
Does the water pump drip ?

Re: hi there! new guy here, fiddling with a neglected 82 interstate, and trying to go naked
Thanks. I bought the caltric water pump replacement, and also scored a deal on two new timing belts. This bike drives me nuts a little. Im still waiting on my second replacement starter motor
I love how quickly amazon ships stuff. Just about everything I've gotten off eBay for the oldwing has been delayed
Dang it, Gord... yeah, My water pump does drip. At least I think that might be where it was coming from. I may have prematurely ordered a replacement radiator. It was like less than $30 though lol. I hadn't even thought about the leak coming from the water pump. Good thing I ordered one of those too

Re: hi there! new guy here, fiddling with a neglected 82 interstate, and trying to go naked
Hi Matt, I too am a new member with an old Goldwing, and I live in Coldspring very near Montgomery, Texas. I got my '75 Wing in December, 2020 and immediately thought WTF have I got into. I completely concur with the timeliness associated with receiving parts and where they come from. A water pump seal kit from Florida took over two weeks; ordered on 02//16 and arrived last Friday.
Good luck with your restore/fixin'.
Maybe we can get together an bench-race over a cold beverage.
Later, Bud...

One more question while it's on my mind. Is there a simple way to swap the top ends of the forks, where they have an airline connecting the two into a standard fork top? Like is that just a common part that can screw on in place? I need to do a fork seal job real soon. I'd rather not have that old hose mucking about lol

Re: hi there! new guy here, fiddling with a neglected 82 interstate, and trying to go naked
The stock forks are air assisted, i.e. some amount of air pressure is required for proper (and safe) function. That said, you could upgrade to aftermarket springs (Progressive is a common brand), which will allow you to go airless. You can then just plug the inlets with the proper size/ threaded bolt and o-ring or sealer.
FWIW, I like the ability to adjust the air pressure for various riding conditions, but that's just me...
