My 1st Goldwing...

#1

Post by Lowrider Bud »

I joined this forum right after the Texas Winter Storm of 2021. Since then I have been unsuccessful trying to resize a photo to fit the requirements for an avatar.

I bought a 1975 GL1000 back in December last year, my 1st Goldwing. Got it at a fairly good price for a project bike, and remembered after I got it home that I should never believe everything someone tells you about a bike that has not run in 14 years.

So, I'm through whining and will proceed with as much constructive input to this forum as I can. From what I'm seeing this forum is a wealth of information supported by a communicatee of dedicated people. Glad you are all here.

I have made a bit of progress with this project:
Rebuilt the front brakes (MC and Calipers) now I can at least move it around the garage without fear it will roll away from me. Good point, it does roll.
Rebuilding the rear brakes. Had some delays with getting the parts, but now they are on the workbench. Everything is cleaned up and ready for reassembly.
Cleaned the gas tank and ordered a new/used sending unit.
Installed a Single carburetor cause the carbs that came with the bike were from an '82 and leaked from all surfaces.
Fired it up only to discover the water pump leaked. New seal kit arrived last Friday. Another Good Point; it starts and runs.

For now I am not working on the bike, but repairing some water damage (mostly minor stuff, but it has to be fixed). Should be able to get back at the bike next week.

I'll post some pictures and my progress soon, so stay tuned.

Thanks to all the "Welcome" replies. I am still making some progress getting the Ol' Wing on the road, but it is a very slow progress. Seems the postal and delivery services are taking their time getting caught up from the holidays. What used to take a couple of days now takes a week to ten days. So, I got that off my chest and am through bashing those hard working folks.

I got brakes both front and back. Got my gas tank cleaned and a new (used) float and sensor. Got the single carb on and running (on the stand), and now have the front off the engine to replace the water pump. It's supposed to be here in x-days.

Now to find out how to add an Aviator and some pictures.

Later, Bud...

make sure to order and replace the 3 aluminum crush washers on the 3 bolts that hold the water pump to the transmission cover or you may get oil leaking into your coolant.

Seems every time I fix something, something else leaks or fails to work.

I finally got the rear brake parts in and finished putting all that together and bleeding the system. Now I have rear brakes (at least on the lift they seem to work ok).

Then a few days later the new water pump showed up. Put it in and filled the system. Forgot to tighten the hose clamps for the lower radiator hose, saw the drips, heart rate went to triple digits, settled down, tightened the clamps, no leaks. Went out the next morning and saw two small drops from the weep hole. Somewhere I read that a new water pump might have a small leak till they get settled in. It's a Honda pump and I'm sure I got all the seals and gaskets installed correctly. Hoping it stops when I get the bike on the road.

In the meantime, I noticed the left front caliper is leaking. The front brakes still feel good at the lever and the leak is very minor. Ordered a rebuild kit. The previous owner assured me he had rebuilt the calipers, etc. He must have rushed through the job.

Sunday night I decided it was time to fire it up again. This time on the bike's gas tank instead of an IV. I installed the new/used fuel sending unit, hooked up the fuel lines, put in 2 gallons of fresh gas, and nothing. No gas coming out of the petcock - WTF? Back to the station got another gallon, put it in and it takes 3 gallons of gas in an empty tank to flow from the petcock. The gas gauge showed 1/4. Very weird - any thoughts why 2 gallons is not enough to flow?

I primed the carb and cranked it and it fired right up and runs. Hope to get it on the road in the next week or so. I still have to fix the tail lights and rear turn signals.

I was going to add the video I took of it running, but I have to figure out how to do that. I'll post it soon (I hope).

Later, Bud...

I rebuilt the engine on my '85 Limited Edition this past year and did a lot of painting of parts and such. Have always reused the crush/sealing washers, but find these can only be used so often, had some leaks especially on the fuel supply at 30 some PSI. I would recommend new crush/sealing washers all round, coolant drain plug, oil drain plug, all caliper hose connections, MC connections. There are crush/sealing washer kits on amazon that are inexpensive and in metric sizes, work pretty good. May have to go to Honda, but Honda charges a premium.

My best guess on volume of fuel in the tank is since they're kinda gravity fed, you need enough "head" (weight of fuel) in the tank to prime the mechanical diaphragm pump? then yer golden.
I got around that by installing a fairly inexpensive Facet/Purolator electric pump. the ones rated for an old VW Beetle @ 3-4 PSI works like a charm. buuuut, it takes a little custom fabwork to mount it.
