New to Wings bought a 1976 GL1000

#1

Post by Senior »

Hi!

Been riding since 1970 (gives me a bit of angina reading that, that I am really that old....my mind is still 12...well, at least according to my wife...

In 1969, my freshman year in High School, my Dad bought me a brand new 1970 Honda SL100 (blue) when it came out. I was living though in NORCAL (Northern California, St. Helena specifically, well up in the mountains above St. Helena) with my grandparents. Rode that bike all over those mountains, trails...lots of dirt riding. In July 1971 a car pulled out in front of me and totaled my beautiful bike! Spent the summer with my parents in Fresno, CA. Really bummed out about no bike and was sure my Dad/Mom (who hated the idea of me having a motorcycle) were never going to let me get another motorcycle because of the accident. Late August (before heading back to my grandparents for school), my Dad came home and said, "Let's go"...Go where? "Look at bikes"... We went to the same dealership that we bought the SL100 at. I was over looking at the CB450's when he said "I like this bike"...he was pointing at a brand new 1972 gold CB750... Yeah, Dad, I like it too!..."Ok, let's get it"... :-D I love my Dad so much and miss him so much!!

Had the CB750 until 1975 (I graduated in 1973). Loved that bike. Took me to a lot of places. Only thing is it ate chains (about every 2000 miles). After that bought a 1965 Triumph TR6C and a 1959 Triumph T120 Bonneville. Was working as a mechanic at a Datsun (Nisson) dealership. Got burned out working there and joined the Navy (U.S. Submarine Service) in 1978. Retired from that in 1998. Went to work for the Department of the Navy and retired from that in 2018. So, what's the point here? :dunno: Prior to retirement, pondered what the heck I was going to do in retirement. Decided to restore old vintage British motorcycles as a hobby and sell them and buy more, etc...My business plan was to Buy High, Restore, Sell Low....so far my business plan is holding up...

THEN I found a 1976 Honda GL1000 Goldwing in Sulfur Yellow...I remember when they came out in 1975. I actually rode a friends 1976 GL1000 (also Sulfur Yellow) and WOW...was really impressed (and I had, had a CB750). Wanted one. Really could not afford it at the time...well, maybe, coulda, but my wife (EX) at the time would have castrated me ala Bobbit if I did. I kinda wanted to keep my junk (as it were) as I had grown very attached to it even though it saw very little use with the wife...(TMI).

Know NOTHING about Hondas and Goldwings except some friends ride them. I have owned, ridden and restored Harleys since 1983 until I retired. Sold my sold my last Harley the month I retired and got into British Bikes to restore. I am NOT going to let it prevent me from restoring it...restoring to me is to make it as close to all original as I can with improvements (usually electrical, wiring, ignition, and safety things). So in accordance with my business plan, I paid High... :IDTS: It had 45K miles on the clock. Not tearing the engine apart (except to certain items as recommended here on the forum while the engine is out of the frame). Frame is ready for paint, then go from there. SO...have been searching for answers as I run across things while working on them specifically. Sometimes I find what I am looking for and sometimes not. BUT....have just now found the time to really delve into this forum. Forgive (in advance) if I have a question that is answered somewhere else that I did not find. Just point me in the right direction. If you feel you also have to point out my shortcomings...heck, go ahead, you will never reach the level that I get from my wife.... ;) Also, being retired, retired with 4 pensions....don't care. :-D

Thanks for reading this (if your really did), hope to meet a lot of you all in the future!

Best Regards,

Senior

Welcome! I kinda like the Brit bikes too, but have only had one. In a vintage motorcycle club in Knoxville where one fellow has over 40 Triumphs, and sometimes rides his Ariel S4 to our Tuesday bike nights. You'll find the 'wing has much better electris than Lucas ever dreamed, although a few things need simple improvements. You will hear this often - "CHANGE YOUR BELTS" - it can save an engine, gets you acquainted with it, and is pretty cheap. I just ordered a pair for mine. Amazon - Gates T274. Yes, many parts are just that easy to find. (Not the missing grab bar, they are unobtainium.) You can get hooked on the big girls, and often find them very cheap in need of rescue. Then you can buy low, sell low.

Oh, yeah. 10 patrols on USS Von Steuben here. Some ships are designed to sink, others require assistance.

Welcome to the club. Always nice to see another Sailor here. I am a retired Airdale, mostly Helo's. Once you get a couple more posts the program will let you start a new thread in the restoration forum. It is a great way to document your build.

I have two new Napa belts to install. The PO last changed belts in 20111/2012?!, he couldn't remember. oooops Changing belts was the first thing I learned on this forum!

I was on 3 Los Angles class boats. Was the Von Steuben stationed in Charleston, SC? I was a Radioman. Spent about 17 years stationed in Hawaii out of my 20 year career. I tried to get off the island every time I came up for orders...there was a Radioman billet open on the Von Steuben. Asked the detailer to send me there. Said he was not going to waste a good Fast Attack sailor on a Boomer...he had a billet in Hawaii he needed to fill, so...always the case when I came up for orders. Really not a bad place to homestead, but got tired of islands...people pay good money to go there. I always tell them spend their money instead going to islands in the Caribbean.... ;)

Thanks for your replay Submate!

Thanks a lot Airmate! Appreciate your service on Helo's. Navy Hilo's have a reputation being underfunded and you all keep them going!!

Yes, VS was "homeported" in Charleston. Operated mostly out of Holy Loch when I was on her. Then she moved to King's Bay with the other boats. Razor blades now, of course. Nuc MM. In just ten patrols served with at least three officers that went on to become Admirals. Good quality leaders.
