new guy from missouri, 77 gl1000.
just picked this bike up Friday. 18,000 original miles. posted locally and languished online for over a week.
meet the seller at a storage facility and worked out a price fair for both of us.
his father bought the bike in the early eighties from the original owner and rode it occasionally for decades. he quit riding in the nineties and it's stewardship was handed over to his son. had the carbs done, timing belt, tires, etc. and rode a bit before moving on to a new bike.
front brake wooden, rear will slow, not stop the bike. carbs would only perform with choke on, enough to ride it around the parking lot where i got it from to check it out. speedo and tach needles sluggish. tach and speedo lights not working, nor neutral light.
got it home and removed the windshield/rear rack/trunk/driving lights/friction cruise control. wanted it as Soichiro Honda and myself envisioned it.
been messing with it a bit. siphoned the old/new gas out of the tank (minor rust speckling near the bottom), filled it with new stuff and mucked about a bit with the carbs on the bike using this as a guide:
https://www.motorcycleproject.com/text/ ... _bike.html
actually helped quit a bit idles, pulls strong, put a couple of miles on it is all.
getting a little weeping from the water pump. can riding it a bit more help the seals swell back up or is it water pump time?
don't burst my bubble yet. this bike is a solid 9-9.5 cosmetically and i'm still in the honeymoon stage with it.

Welcome.
Regarding the water pump, I would run it (I'm no expert).

Re: new guy from missouri, 77 gl1000.
Welcome from Wisconsin. The water pump is notorious for failure, especially if the bike sat for a long period of time. That said, unless you're planning any long trips soon, you might get by with keeping a close watch on it. Some here have experienced only occasional leaks from the weep hole... I will add that of the five Wings I've worked on, all have had water pumps replaced. Just sayin'...

Re: new guy from missouri, 77 gl1000.
My first was a '77. Same color, designs - loved it. The water pump seal is mechanical. They don't swell up. Some will weap a little from time to time and last long (they are lubricated by the fluid they seal). If they start leaking much, they just get worse. A drop around the tell-tale hole or on the floor under the bike occasionally may actually be a good thing. A puddle, not so much.

Good lord that’s clean, I love it.
Congrats on the new bike, I’m still very much in the honeymoon period with mine too.
