New guy on an old 76 (bonus vintage pics!!)
Hey guys, just picked up a 1976 GL100. Been riding about 20 years now and have owned almost as many bikes, but my first real street bike was an 82 CX500 and a few years back I had a 1986 GL1200. I’ve been itching to get back on an holder Honda and specifically a Goldwing.
Saw this one come up for sale locally that looked super clean and had alot of work done to make it ready to go, including carb rebuild by Pistol Pete’s, fresh fluids, tires and belts. Immediately fell in love with it: The local GWRRA chapter has a deal where you ride 7 passes and get a pin. Sounded good to me so took it up the very next morning after I bought it and rode around 300 miles including up to over 14k at mount evans, the bike never missing a beat. Couldn’t be happier.

Ok so now the actually cool part (at least to me…)
So I knew vaguely that my old man had a gold wing. He was a BMW guy his whole life though so it didn’t come up much. I sent a picture of my new bike to my mom and she sent me these pics. Turns out he had a 76 too!!

I’m down in Denver. Was actually just up in WY though. One of the GWRRA chapters has a “borders to borders” deal where you ride at least 5 of the 6 borders of WY and get a little pin (and I’m a total sucker for goofball “challenges”). I decided I was going to ride up to MT hitting NE and SD but a 500ish mile planned day turned into a 750 mile day when I made detours at Scott’s bluff NM and Mount Rushmore. Couldn’t find a room in Hullet so ended up spending the night in Moorcroft. Looonnnnnggg day. But now just UT and ID to go. Oh, and you might notice I put the windjammer on. It’s nice for the longer days for sure.

It is a little hard to tell by your map but it looks like you went through the Big Horn Mountains in WY. This is one of the sweet spots that many people miss when they come to this beautiful state. If you go to Yellowstone coming from the northeast, go through the Big Horn Mountains and you will see some nice country. There are two roads that you can take through this range and they are really different. One is deep canyons with lots of turns and the other is wide open beautiful mountains, rivers and trees. My two favorite roads in Wyoming are the Chief Joseph Highway and Beartooth Pass near Cody.

Man here I am at work. Janis isn't quite ready for something like that yet though. A couple of weeks and she will be.

I was around Devils Tower this trip so a little East of the Bighorn mountains. I’ll have to add them to my list for sure.cfairweather wrote: ↑Tue Aug 03, 2021 5:46 am It is a little hard to tell by your map but it looks like you went through the Big Horn Mountains in WY.
Let’s see a pic of Janis.
