Hello Again II

#1

Post by Roger32849 »

I have been away for a considerable amount of time, mostly due to outside obligations and other issues. I’ve been riding and going on lengthy 8K+ cross country rides. The latest was just shy of 10K miles on a 2015 BMW R1200GS Adventure. I sold all of my Naked Goldwings and the buyers got a great deal. I hit the eject switch and dropped out for a few years (or more)

I recently (like today recently) bought a 1978 GL1000. It was a bargain at $250.00 and came with hard panniers and a Vetter Windjammer SS. The bike wasn’t in my garage more than 15 minutes and the nakedness of the bike started. I even posted the panniers and fairing on Craigslist for cheap money. I ordered the parts needed for lights since the fairing was removed…..turn signals and those special mounts, I also ordered the headlight bezel and mounting hardware. Naturally the radiator side scoops were missing and I found those as well.

The bike has stale gas in the tank, the tank vale is off, don’t know the condition of the carbs yet but sent pistol Pete an email to see if he is still in business cleaning carbs and setting them up.

The PO said the bike was started last year and ran for a bit then stalled. I can imagine the foul gas in the tank didn’t do the carbs any good. I shot a spritz of ether in the intake plenum and it started right up….. sooooo, now the work begins….

I need to do a tutorial on how to post an image…..

Thank you for the welcome. I read about Pete about an hour after I made my post. It’s very sad, he was one of the best guys to have around a GL1000. I didn’t know him personally, but he did some fantastic work on some carbs for me.

I am going to keep my new to me 78 GL1000 as low dollar as I can (for now). These tend to be money pits once you get started. I am removing the OEM carburetors and going single carb conversion using the 34PICT-3 carb and naturally a home manufactured plenum. At some point I will have the carburetors cleaned and rebuilt but want to take care of some things on the bike like fuel tank remove and replace or clean out, clutch and brake work and at least one new tire. The rear is pretty much worn out. The usual stuff. Like oil change, and clean up….

Good news is, I have a nice clean no rust fuel tank I kept when I sold my bikes. We all know what a PITA it is to R&R a tank, let alone cleaning one out. It’s early and I need to get started…..

Anyway, thanks for the welcome back….

Pete was a true gentleman, missed in every group he touched. I would suggest that if your fairing and bags don't sell fast, put them out for trash pickup. They have almost zero resale value. Then inspect all wires that had Scotchlok connectors for conductor damage and splice if needed. I heal all insulation cuts with liquid electrical tape. Carefully inspect the crossmember that the center stand mounts to for rust or over-zealous operation damage. Honda added gussets to the joints between that cross member and the frame for '79s.
