New here no ride yet!

#1

Post by essjayarr »

I’ve been lurking here a while and this is my 1st post. For a while I’ve been daydreaming of reliving fond memories of my ownership of a naked 1982 GL1100 I bought new. It was a black version. I bought it when I was 24 years old and living in Los Angeles. I’ve got a couple leads on low mileage (under 10k)original owner bikes. I’ve picked up some good tips here on what to look for and look out for.
While searching I stumbled onto and bought an NOS exhaust system. They are stamped HM463. I expect there are rare but how rare?
I have a 74 CB750K and those pipes are impossible to find. My goal is a totally stock bike like I took off the showroom floor in 1982. I’ll try to post a pic of the exhaust. So for now I’ll just throw a leg over the pipes and imagine a bike there.

Welcome from St Louis. Nice find on the pipes, clean and shiny. Where do you call home these days? Hint; add your general location to your profile.

Welcome to the 'Wingdom.

Those pipes are pretty impressive ... there are good bikes out there, but you’ll need good luck to find one as good as those pipes ...

I’ll be looking elsewhere to post this question, but will ask here. Maybe those of you who have already responded here will have some insight or direction for me.
In my search for a naked 1100, I have come upon a 1 owner very low mileage Interstate. Is there a market for the fairing, bags and trunk and what could the value be. They are near mint and the color being dark blue.

Not really, I kept the bags on mine but lost the trunk and fairing. Made for a handy cruiser and a good bike for an extended trip.

Thoughts on availability of standard mirrors, front turn signals and mounts? Also faux tank sides for a standard. Color once again dark blue. Other option is full body plastics in black, my 1st choice.

You will not likely find a market for the plastics off an interstate here on NGW. Maybe elsewhere but very limited value. Like you say you will be looking for turn signals, tail light assembly, seat grab bar, headlight & housing, mounting ears. maybe footpegs to replace floorboards, and the tank is painted with striping to accentuate the fairing etc. Many of these items are becoming harder to find at a reasonable price and in nice condition. Just a few things that come to mind after stripping an 83 Aspencade. These things all cost money to try get a bike close to a standard. Maybe have some patience and look for a standard model.

Welcome from Maine! That's a real find on your exhaust. It'll be hard to find a reasonably priced bike to match the look of the pipes.

Others here know far more than me, but a GL1100 Interstate can be taken naked pretty easily. (I've done two.) You'll need to source a range of bits - as Jonesz notes. An OEM rear grab bar is especially tricky to locate - at something approaching a reasonable price.

The problem of a grab bar and both headlight ears and signals may be enough of a reason to wait for a Standard to come up for sale - at a fair price. If you'll compromise and not seek OEM, it's not as tricky - and you get to customize.

I'd recommend holding onto the bags and mounts. One of my GLs has the bags - super handy. I cut the trunk mount to clean up the tail section, as many before me have done. It's a good look.

If you're thinking you'll paint the plastics, you could easily use the Interstate shelter. The faux tank sides for an 1100 are riveted to a shelter frame and don't come off as easily as they do on the 1000s. I DO think they're the same sides. The standards just have holes punched in to mount the Honda logo - and don't have quite the same pinstriping. I spent hours up close and personal with one of those Interstate tanks, repairing cracked fiberglass, sanding, filling, priming, painting, etc. And I also have a standard tank, so I did a good bit of comparison.

Be a lioness on the savannah: Watch, wait, then pounce on what looks like something you want. (Maybe the bike you're eyeing is it; maybe it isn't. In New England, there will be a dozen more options before April.)

I have a tip on a 1981 Standard under 10k miles. I’m being told it is green, but the closest to that is harvest gold metallic. Still, I’ve never seen one on that color. Anyone?
And yes, they are adamant it is factory stock paint.
