New here, first bike, life long goal.

Post by SCRAGNOTH »

So recently a good older friend of mine and his family needed help moving on short notice. In his back barn, he had an old goldwing that started up and ran but had a bad drive shaft along with the engine and rear end of a gl1100 that he gave to out of the kindness of his heart and having no need for them.

Now since my parents sold my Suzuki out from under at 13, I've been wanting to get back in the saddle, but, life is. With this windfall I finally have a chance! :-D as soon as he told me that I could take it off his hands I immediately started researching and came across this forum and a few others, but fell in love with the naked look on these bikes. The custom builds done by the folk on this forum are incredible to say the least as well as the wealth of information.

The starting hardware: from the plate on the steering column, it's an 85, but when I try to lookup the Vin it comes up as invalid. Course it's filthy so I'll wait till I can get at it better to try again. As you can see it's a gl1200, Aspencade. Any other details you can give me about it from the images is greatly appreciated!

I'm trying to seperate this project into stages.
1: giter nekkid.
2: Engine teardown and over haul, all repairs, replacements needed including preventative ones (yes including the timing belt).
3: Reassemble and get it rolling. Trouble shoot and go back to step 2 as needed.
4: Start getting creative. I've seen many different modifications from extreme to simple that look absolutely beautiful. I can't wait to get to this point.

My budget is limited, and I'm looking at this as a great opportunity (excuse) to build up my toolbox. But this is a passion project for me and any help you all can offer will be welcomed with open arms!

Welcome from St Louis. Firstly, it's a good idea to put location and the bike info in your profile and signature. That helps the rest of us help you without constantly asking. Secondly, the 1200 motor is great. Rebuilds are rarely necessary and are very costly to find new parts like rings and bearings. I had a 1200 interstate for several years and loved it. Thirdly, the 1200 Aspy is one of the harder models to convert to nekid (my opinion). Read all you can and ask lots of questions. Good luck with your project and hope to meet you on the road one of these days.

I will! Thanks for the advice.

This is something I've heard about many times in my brief time reading through. The reliability and lasting power of these bikes is a definite plus! But this one has sat in a barn for years and before that was worked on by some guy in his shed with a substance abuse problem. So if possible I'll do all I can to make sure it's in the best condition I can. Like I said, shoestring budget, and I'm gonna take it slow and do what I know I can. ;)

I'm a minimalist when it comes to my machines. I've worked around them my whole life, and the first thing I was taught was the simpler a thing is, the less that can go wrong with it! So my goal is to delete all the frills on the bike and only keep what's needed to run. CB, sound system, heater? Na, don't want it. KISS rule. All that said I don't doubt you at all. I have the front cowling off and it looks like an octopuss had a child with a rubics cube. I'll definitely be reading the forums and bugging the hell out of you folk for advice!

Welcome from Maine!

Once you get to pulling off the plastics and wrenching on your 1200, start a build thread over in the Members Restorations/Projects forum (or Underground Customizing if you're really going for serious custom). We'll watch with interest.

Shop Talk is a great resource, as has been noted.
