First time GW owner/builder in OKC

#1

Post by Cjohnson »

Hi everyone, I’ve been lurking on here for a few weeks and it’s been a fantastic source of information. I bought a 78’ GL1000 a few weeks ago and have completely dismantled, while hoping I actually have the skills to put it back together again!

I’m looking to build a bratt-style/tracker style bike in the coming months, rough overview of my plans:
Frame powder coat
Engine Paint
Lithium-Ion battery conversion (including update regulator/rectifier)
Rewire with motogadget Mo.unit
Digital speedo/tach conversion
Handlebar/controls swap - looking at biltwell tracker
Full lighting swap
Chop or aftermarket replacement of fenders
Custom seat
Swap to 77’ faux fuel tank and paint panels

Phase 2: GSXR front end swap/progressive springs on the rear

I would love to hear from anyone here that’s in Oklahoma.

Also, I need to source replacement Swingarm bearings if anyone can point me to a current source.

welcome I USED to live in Oklahoma (near Claremore) but not any longer. Be sure to start a restore thread.

It looks like the muffler is black? I cannot tell from the picture whether it is a 78/9 muffler which was painted, or if it is a 75-77 horseshoe. On second look the chrome bolt on pieces are 78/9.
Looks like it is in good shape

I used to work in Claremore, over a decade ago.

The Muffler is black with chrome heat shields, and a cross-pipe between the two mufflers. Headers are also black. Overall it seems to be in great shape except for one cracked side panel, and the engine being coated in decades of grease and dirt!

Welcome to the party! I second the build thread. Overall it looks like a very decent start to build off of.

From what I can tell, that IS a stock muffler for the year bike you have, but the muffler at least (from the factory) was chrome. Not sure about the headers (the '77 model used chrome shields, but I'm not sure if the '78/'79 did too), but that muffler was definitely painted. Still, not a bad look though.

Then they are 789 mufflers, and someone painted them. we lived up near Lake Oologah from 2003 until 2018

78-9 had chrome shields as well
