First post 79GL1000
Hi all,
Been reading and searching this site for months, and the tips, knowledge and pride of ownership of these bikes has been outstanding.
Found this one is a junk yard, brand new to me, and decided to buy it for $150 bucks and bring it back to the living. Thanks to all the info on this site... it actually runs, and runs pretty darn good. Here's some pics.
Cheers,
Mick

That's quite a transformation. Nice job. What part of the planet do you call home? Hint: put that info in your profile or signature for easy reference.

In Texas. 50 miles east of Austin, 75 miles north of the Alamo, and 69 miles north of "Come and Take It".
Another pic. Took it home only because it had 36K on the clock. Good bones.

Re: First post 79GL1000
Still trying to figure out how to post a pic reliably. The last one didn't come thru. Let's try again.
The bike was missing quite a few parts. Found the driveline laying in a pile about 200 feet away. There was no shelter box or about a dozen other needed parts. Thanks to FleaBay most of it came together without too much trouble. That cardboard box in the pic had the original license plate in it, 2009.
What made me take this project on I still have not figured out.

Re: First post 79GL1000
Welcome. I love the '79s. They had some updates that were the result, I feel, of a constant improvement process. Also a bit of parts-bin as I've seen many that had parts that seemed to belong on a '78.

Re: First post 79GL1000
Thanks for the welcome fellas.
I took a leap of faith mainly because of the low miles (33K) and that it had been sitting in a barn for 12 years before it arrived at the junk yard. The owner passed away and the widow eventually cleaned out the barn.
After inventorying and cleaning I started on refurbishing it as suggested on this forum. Sent the carb set to Pistol Pete and did every thing else myself. Once I got it running I replaced belts, rebuilt calipers and master cylinders, put in Dyna electronics, new starter, more electronics, front forks, and on and on and on. Whatever it took to get it right I did.
First pic is with temporary fuel tank just to see if it would run. That first start was scary because there were clouds of smoke for what I thought was way too long. Must of been from all that oil I was squirting in the cylinders to make sure they were lubed up.
That pile of brown toxic waste came out of the gas tank. There was a lot more in there.
Turns out the motor, clutch, trans and running gear is like new which is a big sigh of relief.
Merry Christmas and a most Happy New Year to all.
Few more pics.
