I'll be stuck here, so might as well make an introduction

Hi all!

Been lurking on the forums since days after I bought my wing.
1980 GL1100, history pretty unknown, I was almost gonna pass on it or talk the guy down, but my wife said something along the lines of "seems like a great deal, right?" so I ignored the clear slow oil leak, paid the man, and rode it through rural Wisconsin at dusk on my birthday. I think I saw a deer every 15 minutes. Terrifying.

But the way these 'wings handle and perform.... Even before it was mine and I took it on that first test ride, instant smile. I've toyed with selling it and trying something else, but never actually get close to seriously considering it, something always pulls me back. I've done a fair amount of maintenance and customization work on it, and the reactions at the meets I go to have convinced me to keep it, and keep making it mine.

I'll make a build thread eventually with what I do have documented. I think I've lost a lot of pictures due to a "whoopsie" when cleaning out some google photos storage, and also not really planning to do a build thread. So here is what she looked like the day I got her, and basically where she is now (though the headers have actually been painted now):

Hello audiojunkie!

I've noted you had joined the Club approximately 4 1/2 years ago and this is your first post.
The photos present quite the transformation of the bike you drove away from the seller however long ago you took first possession of it tumb2

I'm sort of surprised for some strange reason.

Your before/after shows just how much smaller the GL1100 looks if you lose the saddle, swap on some low rise bars, and leaner fenders. At first glance, I thought you had changed up the shelter for an actual tank. It weighs maybe 15-20 pounds less, but it looks like it dropped 150 pounds.
Avatar is a summer '21 photo of the Blue Phoenix, our 1983 GL1100I rescue gone naked.

In the Stable and Ridable
1992 ST1100 - my longer haul tourer
1992 XJ600S - son's streetfighter
1987 VFR700 - son's latest, in blue/silver
1983 - GL1100I - naked Blue Phoenix (son's, really)
1982 GL1100I - naked bagger Cabernet
1979 GL1000 - Ginger Lynn, but not that Ginger Lynn (Wing and a Prayer)
1978 CB550K - son's cafe (carb issues still vex)

Active Project(s)
1979 GL1000 - Confirmed one owner, with original paperwork. Vetter fairing and bags, off the road in dry, heated storage for 35 years.

Sold

Yeah, "thinning out" all the extras really gives it a "gymbro after a cut" look. Shortening the fenders, dropping the radiator deflectors, even subtle stuff like losing the fairing on the gauge cluster... Plus I think doing the satin black for the battery/tank covers also helped change the look.
