New Guy - WI

#1

Post by Johnie »

Hello and thanks for the add to this forum. I spend a lot of time on the CB750 forum, however, a month ago a picker friend found a 76 GL1000 for me. The owner passed away a few months ago and the family was cleaning out the home. The bike was in the garage for the past 20+ years and not ridden. Some parts were missing - rear grab rail, all blinkers, foot pegs, throttle, L/R handlebar switches, grips, radiator screen, headlight rim and bulb, etc. Gas tank was empty and there are 5 cut wires to trace. Good news there is a clean title and engine is free. Mileage is 15,500 which would explain the excellent paint, chrome, gauges and the pristine seat. I was going to part it out, but after seeing the nice condition, low miles and 50,000+ parts on eBay decided there was no need to flood the market. So I have been sourcing and installing parts, doing a lot of cleaning and removing a lot of unnecessary wiring. In no big hurry to get this done as I do ride a CB750KO and CB750K3. And now with summer getting close and grandkids here in WI my time in the shop will limited to rainy days. My original plan was to get the bike in the shop and wait for winter, but it looked so pitiful in it's condition I had to start on it. Thanks again and will be checking out the forums to see what I can learn on this bike.

Welcome from St Louis. Looks like a solid bike to start your refresh. Many here have started out with bikes in worse condition.

Welcome! Change your belts! Yes, you may hear it again, but it is a wise precaution early-on, and helps you to get to know it. tires old enough to vote must be replaced also. Then, there will be the things that need rebuilt - brakes, carbs. Electrical scares some, but it is just a matter of doing one connector at a time and keeping track of everything. These old 'wings have a pretty good supply of aftermarket replacements for such as headlights and rims. Even some of the CB750 parts cross over.

That is a great find. Suspect she may have had a fairing so that may be part of the wiring challenge. Looks to be a great restoration project!!

Welcome from Maine.

You scored a really nice example in a special color. Start a build thread over in the Restorations/Projects forum if you haven't yet. We'll watch the build from there.
