Initially, the float bowl on all carbs looks pretty good - not what was expected:

Those need to be removed to ensure they are clean and I pray they are the fabled "press in" type! (They are! action1 ) Using a drywall screw and small vice grips we can pop'em right out!:

A bird's eye view looking down with the low speed jet removed:

No light was visible when looking through them so first they'll get a short soak in penetrating oil:

Then they got a wonderful 30 minute experience in a RevereWare hot tub.
Vinegar and Citrus Stripping Gel are added to the bathwater:

And once removed they are really, really clean and light is visible through all drilled ports:

The ports in the jets are so tiny that none of these wires would fit through them (bread tie, bread tie sanded to be thinner, an led bulb with a rigid filed lead):

Floats were then adjusted to correct setting (little plug for Randakk's float setting tool here!):

Rack was then reinstalled on the engine with 4 new intake elbow o-rings:

The good news: it idles on it's own and doesn't quit.
The bad news: it still doesn't run good and more exploration is needed.
Here's the latest video after the carb rack was reinstalled:

Amazing and inspiring! On the videos I looked at it really makes it look like a completely different bike. I like!
Only serious thing I want to advice is the seat support inline pipe on pipe weld can fatigue easily, add sole extra metal to it, the bike is awesome thanks for the pics and tips!

You might want to take a close look at your intake valves on #1 and #3.
(the pistons ain't supposed to have those marks on them)

In the last episode of looking into this GL1100, a head gasket was leaking anti-freeze. Upon removing the heads it appeared as though at one time the valves made contact with piston #1 and #3 leaving a very distinct imprint in them.
-
In this week's posting the heads will be under the microscope, and to set the stage (and a teaser) I'll refer to a pic from an earlier post which at quick glance really doesn't show much..
-
Image
-
-
But a closer and properly exposed photo shows more detail...
-
Image
-
-
If "it" got by you in that photo, here's a close-up:
-
Image
-
-
Good thing that broken piece of a valve spring didn't go down into the "Tunnel of Love" and into the base of the engine! devil1
-
Since there's evidence of a broken spring, that will be the head to attack first:
-
Image
-
Image
-
-
And here's the little bugger - an inner comfort coil spring (on cylinder #1's exhaust valve) action1 :
-
Image
-
This is also the head that had the anti-freeze leak and very little of the head gasket stuck to the block upon removal:
-
Image
-
-
And not much of the gasket stuck to the head either:
-
Image
-
Image
-
Image
-
-
The good news is the surface was a breeze to clean-up!
-
Image
-
-
The left side head (cylinders #2 and #4), wasn't leaking, but it also had a broken inner exhaust valve spring (on #2 cylinder):
-
Image
-
-
Like the other head, the gasket wasn't sealed well so clean-up was easy:
-
Image
-
-
All valves were treated to new valve seals. The old ones were fairly stiff but not cracked:
-
Image
-
Image
-
All of the valves and guides are serviceable:
-
Image
-
Image
-
Image
-
Image
-
Image
-
-
All of the exhaust valve springs had these shims under them:
-
Image
-
Image
-
-
Except for the broken inner springs on the exhaust valves (all four were replaced) , this GL1100 is looking better all the time!
And the beat goes on! :crosso

Hmm, interesting. None of the 1100 heads I've done had any shims (80-82's). Cool that you didn't find any bent valves...

Ditto Track T 2411!
I have a 1980 here and it doesn't have those shims, so they got my attention when I saw them.
It is possible that either the valves are tougher than they look, or, maybe someone's been in this engine before and did some damage control.

Exhaust springs have shims = broken exhaust springs? interesting.

I have never seen shims in a gl head before.
I agree with you that it looks like someone has done some head work in the past.
the non sealed headgasket indicates an improper torque.
I also believe that valves would show some evidence of their contact with the piston.

With the heads checking out OK, just a couple of new head gaskets and all is good.

Have to ask. Why did you not remove the cam holders and cams before removing the valve springs. It is a lot easier with those off. I also saw in one pic you had the head with the gasket surface face down with the cams installed. It is possible to bend a valve doing that.

Shims under the springs are used to bring spring pressures back to spec or to increase spring pressure. Thickness can vary. Hard to tell how thick those are.

Hi robin1731,
I'm not sure how one bends a valve but I suppose it can happen.
Before any of the valves were removed, the cam is rotated to ensure the valves are seated like in this pic:
-

-
-
Each person has their own preferences on how they do things, and for valve removal I find it very easy to do it with the cam holders/cams in place.
-
Still hard to believe those valves are the ones that left the mark on the pistons...
On the flip side, they all have a consistent look/patina to them...

Heretwhat a valve looks like after hitting the piston. (Don’t ask) I would venture a guess that yours were replaced already.

ericheath - I won't ask, but thanks for the pic. action1 :2thumbs
It confirms what I imagined one would look like short of being obliterated, and due to the absence of similar marks, I agree that the ones in these GL1100 heads were replaced at some point.

With new valve seals, and the inner exhaust valve springs replaced, the heads are getting the thumbs-up.
Our next stop is the engine to clean up the head-to-block mating surface and deal with anything else that might pop-up.
-
The head gasket stuck a little better to spots on the engine than it did with the heads, but clean-up was fairly easy here too:

-
The valve to piston signatures have been perfectly preserved. A last look at one:
-
Image
-
-
Although it may not be necessary, we're not taking chances: the gaskets got a blast of Permatex Copper Spray:
-
Image
-
Image
-
-
And I've not forgotten the oil restrictors which might never have been previously removed. They were cleaned and each treated to two new o-rings:
-
Image
-
Image
-
-
The head bolts got a suave of moly-paste, they were torqued in 6 steps. Small 10mm lower head oil return bolts torqued to complete the head reinstall.
-
Timing belts are now back on and timing marks are lined up as they should be:
-

-
A really nice GL1100 radiator complete with fan was purchased off eBay for $16.90. It hasn't yet arrived but the pics looked great - no bent fins, etc... Will take a chance on it and solder my leaking one for a spare.
-
While we wait for the radiator to arrive, the starter looked like it wanted to be taken apart and checked:

-
Cleaned up the commutator and gears, regreased, reassembled, reinstalled...
-
All-in-all, things are moving along! type1
