So if you wanted to powder coat your carb tops...

You can't.

Unless you can find a way to replace the little cap on top, that is.

This was 30 minutes at 365 degrees. 35 degrees short of the 400+ needed to cure most powders. (part of the cleaning process)

Ouch. Luckily this was a spare I found in the trunk of the bike when I bought it.

According to the pages I've read, there's no replacement for these parts... Sure you could rig something... what I want to know is; what is the function of this cap, and if I found something different to seal it, is the seal sufficient to fulfill its purpose?

Numerous caps have been replaced with a variety of items. I think Rebel used nickels, I have heard beer caps , I used pieces of plastic from spray paint can tops. It has to be air tight but use extreme caution not to plug the small vent hole inside the top that lets the vacuum in to operate the slide.

I found some stainless steel sheet metal plugs at my local ACE hardware store, the type that pop into a hole and have little fingers on the back to keep them there.

I folded the fingers over and fastened them in place with black RTV. It almost looks stock!

That is SWEET.

So, black chrome on the polished engine bits it is!

I see the little air port... I'll keep it open.

Thanks guys! You made my day!

More ideas on repairing carb caps:

http://www.randakks.com/TechTips.htm#55

If you go the epoxy route, use clear epoxy not JB Weld...looks much better to my eye.

I have a few Japanese engineer friends here at work; they said they could get me some 500 yen coins (about 5 bucks each) for the tops of the carbs...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:500JPY.JPG

How sweet would that be?

-Deek

P.S. if they had 1000 yen coins it would be even better... but they're paper bills, no coins in circulation.

Yeah, how sweet would that be? 100 is the closest...

I was looking for some currency in 250 (whatever) denominations but the closest I could come up with were all bills.

Then I was thinking, what the hell? Why would I put a Romanian coin or whatever on a Japanese bike in the US? Stupid.

So I'm back to the Yen coins. I'll probably do one up and one down on each side... not that they're all that visible, but it's the little things, ya know?
