#1

Post by Mike-C »

Good Evening Folks;
This had probably been hashed and rehashed before but, has anybody ever adapted a 1500 rear wheel to a 1200?

Yep. But it still has the same issues if you were thinking of going over to the "dark side"... Ie, mounting a car tire. Wish I could find a reasonable priced way to do it...

if you are doing it to go darkside it doesn't seem to work, if you are doing it because of the bearing problem that some 1200's have it will work. it will also raise your wing up about an inch from what i've read. there is also a good writeup on gl1200goldwings.com

Good Evening Gents;
No car tires for me, folks, I just want a fatter rear tire. Aproper motorcycle tire for a proper motorcycle. I saw a couple of write ups where a complete GL 1500 final drive and wheel was installed but I just want the wheel. I'll check it out.

Resurrecting this, but trying to find out the answer. I've read all about fitting the 1500 Final Drive Unit and wheel to the 1200 SwingArm, but also that a 1200 wheel can actually be fitted to the 1500 FDU. However...

Is the reverse true, can a 1500 wheel be installed onto the 1200 FDU?

Seems to me it ought to be possible, but can anyone confirm?

Maybe the 88-89 years since they were six pin drives. 90-2000 were five pin. ( my memory may have them reversed)

Yes I forget when they changed, but is it relevant? The drive splines on both FDUs are the same, so could you not use the 1500 wheel with its drive flange (5 or 6 pin) and mount it straight onto the 1200 FDU? As far as I know any 1500 wheel can fit any 1500 FDU so that doesn't matter which drive flange is used as long as correct for the wheel.

Yes, thanks, already read that, but doesn't actually answer the question. I know about the variations in drive flange and wheel on the 1200 and the 1500 and I've also read someone has used a 1200 wheel with the 1500 FDU, but what I cannot seem to find out is whether the reverse is true. It should be, but I wondered if anyone could confirm that a 1500 wheel WILL fit the 1200 FDU.

I have an early 1500 wheel and flange that seems to go in my 1200 pumpkin and swing just fine...haven’t mounted the brake yet, but it looks like it should fit.

Hope that helps.

Oh yes. Yes indeed. That's exactly the information I was looking for. Thank you.

Even better, it's what I wanted to hear :)

Since the 1500 wheels are interchangeable (5 <-> 6 stud flange type) as the FDU didn't change, we could also assume any 1500 wheel will fit the 1200 FDU.

I love it when a plan comes together. :-D
