Re: Another Brat Build
Good Evening Folks;
Thanks for the kind words. The bike is our un-Terstate that I built for my son Barrie. It started life with us as part of a two Wing deal we found in New Hampshire. $600 for two '84 1200's and a big box of parts. We took the best and sold off what we did not need. I think we have perhaps $250 in the two bikes. One big glitch was that there was only one title so we could only build one runner.
I don't want to hi-jack Slo-Beemer's thread so I will put together a photo package and if the powers of the Moderators agree, start a gallery.

Re: Another Brat Build
Back from the dead! AGAIN! Its been many years and everything has been crazy busy but I've been working on it here and there over. Very slowly coming together but I thought I'd update everybody. The motor let go on me back in the middle of 2012 I think. I'm still not sure exactly what failed but that motor was questionable since day one. So I couldn't find a 1100 motor within driving distance that was any good so I ended up with a 1986 1200 sei motor. Has caused some head scratching but overall it was a fairly straightforward swap. The turning point was when the stator failed. So out comes the motor again and I'm sure you guys know how it goes. One thing leads to another and the next thing you know your looking at a bare frame wondering what happened. haha

But fortune changed at the beginning of this year and I've been making huge strides.
Work on the frame.
And the painted frame sitting in my living room. (single life ftw! )

One, two, skip a few and we end up here! The first time out on the road in almost 4 years! Running but still needs lots of work.
Now I have a few questions. I installed a new 1200 sei stator which I understand is larger but now Im overcharging. Everything checks out fine but when I got back from the test ride the battery was reading 16 volts I'm still running a stock 1100 rectifier so do you guys think a 1200 sei rectifier would help that problem?

Re: Another Brat Build
Quite a few recent charging glitches have been cured by ensuring the reg/rectifier case is properly grounded. Being yiur frame looks recently painted, maybe check that first.
Nothing beats that first ride with no seat, no side covers, no false tank!!

Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: Another Brat Build
That was the first thing I checked last night after the ride but a quick search on google resulted in me thinking it wasn't necessary. I guess I'll try that before ordering a new rectifier.
Yes! I was so excited I didn't even wait to get the front brake working. Still waiting on some short levers for the zx14 front master cylinders. Surprisingly though, it wasn't to uncomfortable sitting on the gas tank. I rode it about 3 miles through back streets to the gas station. Even had a small crowd gathering around it wondering what it was. lol

Check this out and please give feedback there, and here, whether it was successful to correct your GL1100's charging problem too; or wasn't successful. Thanks!

Re: Another Brat Build
Thanks to Cliff and Eric I now have a working charging system!
I can't keep myself from sneaking in a ride here and there around the neighborhood just as is. haha It just seems to remind me of how much work is still needed though. I'm running a 34 pict 3 carb and thats still giving me some small headaches. Overall I'm very happy with the carb, just started right up right out of the box, just need to get it set up. Tonight I took it over to my sisters house and on the way back, it just refused to hold an idle. Found this in the idle jet. Guess I shouldn't expect the chinese to care too much about cleaning carbs before they ship them out. Tomorrow I'll clean out the rest of the carb and reinstall it.
Tonight I'm hoping to get all of the wires lengthened for my trail tech and finalize that install. I also was able to test fit my false tank and I have another big problem there. The banjo bolts are hitting the tank pretty severely when the bars are anything but straight. I going to have to ditch my drag bars but I'm not sure if I'll like any other options. Clubmans are too extreme with the relatively forward stock pegs and small rise handlebars will be too tall for me. Time for more thinking juice.

Re: Another Brat Build
Got it running again and couldn't resist taking it out for lunch. It made it about 6 miles to Jersey Mikes for a celebratory sammach.
It rode pretty nice. Just have to get the carb figured out. A bit of a flat spot just off idle. Things were going too smoothly though and when I got out I noticed my rear end seal and let go again. I had just taken it apart and cleaned out the seal and it seemed to work for a bit but must have let go when I got to speed.
Does anybody have a lead on that seal? Local Honda dealership can't get it anymore. It seems it has been discontinued for some time now. Or should I just order another final drive unit from the wreckers and hope it's good?- BikeMaine

Re: Another Brat Build
Sorry I can't help with seal.
But could you please post more information and photos of your carburetor set-up?

Re: Another Brat Build
Yeah of course! Unfortunately I am working 12 hour shifts and won't have time for a few more days. But I posted some information in this thread and I think I have some pictures on my phone. It is made out of 1.5" pvc pipe with an empi 34 pict 3 sitting on top. I think I paid $12 for everything at the hardware store and just over $100 for the carb. I figured it was something to try while I was waiting for other parts.
