Re: Eric's build of a Custom/Cafe GL
This past week has been a good one.
1st I got my rear wheel bearing retainer tool that I ordered in.
I had taken my wheels a local shop to get the tires taken off and the bearings pulled so I could re-spoke and possibly powder coat the wheels. Well they had problems with the rear wheel bearing retainer. This is what I got back from the shop.
To be fair to the shop they let me know they were having problems getting it out and asked if I wanted them to continue or leave as is. I said go ahead, cause if you guys can't get it out doubt I will be able to.
When I went to pick up they apologized and didn't charge me for any of their work. Luckily with the poor snow winter they did not have a lot of snowmobiles to work on. I think that I had given them a challenge and they did their darndest to get it out.
Luckily I had a couple spare wheels at home that I attempted to get the retainer out.
Here was my process.
1. Soak in PB blaster multiple times a day for a week.
2. Research on NGW for best Method
3. drill out the punch marks
4. Try to use the Punch and Screw driver method
this did not budge anything
5. Thread each hole and screw in a bolt and long lever:
-This resulted in breaking out two of the holes.
6. Use a drift and try to turn the retainer.
- just broke out more of the retainer
7. Break down and order a bearing retainer tool.
This is what I ordered "Motion Pro 08-0227 XR Bearing Retainer Tool" http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GZ ... UTF8&psc=1
This was received in a couple of days and worked perfectly.
Using my impact gun and in about 30 seconds I removed both bearing retainer that I broke and one that had not been damaged.
This is the one I had busted:
This is the other spare wheel:
Next I had a bunch of different parts show up at the door:
My new speedo/Dash unit
Parts for the Hydraulic Clutch Conversion, New Spark Plug Caps, & Steering Stem bearings
And Finally the newly sealed gas tank from Elizabeth Radiator
Then I was able to get my engine swapped into my Sidecar rig to make sure that it is going to run properly.
I would say a successful week, even thought I found a couple of electrical gremlins that kept me from actually starting the bike.

Re: Eric's build of a Custom/Cafe GL
Always a bit like Christmas when the parts show up. I got some brake lines in today!! Bet it didn't seem like such a good week a few days ago. Glad the tool worked for you. Have some of those pesky bearings on my 75 project. I will likely need the tool myself.

@Easter, Yes it was a rough couple of weeks while I figured out how to get that retainer out.

@jvacustoms. The paint is House of Kolor Organic Green over Orion Silver.
It is 3 coat system. Base, top and clear.

Re: Eric's build of a Custom/Cafe GL
At the moment I am going to try my local source to see if he is still in business. I haven't seen him since last spring, but he helped me setup my sidecar and did some headers for me last spring.

Re: Eric's build of a Custom/Cafe GL
what is your idea for spokes. I can see your going to need some. I was thinking of having mine powdercoated black and using chrome spokes, but I haven't found any. Where did you find yours?

Re: Eric's build of a Custom/Cafe GL
I got some from SunBobb that are used, but in great shape. I don't think they are chrome. I have also thought of going with some stainless steel from the like of buchannons. Haven't quite decided yet. I am also planning on black rims.

I would go with stainless steel spokes and polish them if you want them shiny. Chrome just doesn't hold up enough. IMO55mphx4 wrote:what is your idea for spokes. I can see your going to need some. Re: Eric's build of a Custom/Cafe GL
I wonder what the original spokes are made of. Wonder how it would look to paint the spokes and polish the rims? A lot to think about? I only want to do it once since it seems like a lot of work. It's been a while since I've laced a rim?
