UPDATE! Wes Cooley Fairing Project to the GL1000

#1

Post by NunzioGL »

Well, I had her running great just before the plenum seal started leaking fuel into the #2 cylinder.

So I've cleaned out the garage of some excess bike parts that were left over from my CB750F SS and ebay'd a bunch of stuff to fund the GL project.

Here's what I've compiled so far:
1. Randakk master carb rebuild kit, with new bowl drains. Carbs are all cleaned rebuilt and ready for installation. See below.
2. 78 Rear fender - I'm going to paint it and use an alternate tail light and license bracket.
3. Sportster tail light assembly and license bracket (Ala Randakk's setup, I just like the cleanliness of that look)
4. A complete set of body work, false tank top and sides, back panel and side covers - These will be painted in a Candy Glory Red CBX theme.
5. New after market 7V regulator. Gauges now work as new.
6. Beck Arnly - Fan switch
7. Swapped out my GL coils with the ones from my 750F. (as having problem with wires too short and arching inside the plug cap.
8. New solid Belkin silicone plug wires
9. Randakk - Swing arm nut caps
10. Some cheap RFP Gas Shocks, look like Ohlins (I have a set of Ohlins on my 750 now). I'm sure I won't like them, but they look cool.

So here are a few picks of the carb rebuild. I am refinishing the vacuum top buttons with paint and clear coat, should look good.
The carb connector covers are going to be painted black, I'm not a big fan of chrome.

Nice! I have experienced Jim's hospitality and have seen his shop, we are in for a real treat. Everything is top notch super clean and his paint work is exceptionally good. anim-cheers1 Can't wait to see the CBX paint theme on a GL!

Russ,

Thanks for the kind words. I'll have this done by spring if the helmet painting and my regular job doesn't get in the way too much.

Maybe we can organize a GL ride next summer?

I'm trying to sort all the mechanical stuff out before I tear it down. I'm just about there, the carbs go back on tomorrow and that should be it.

I'm undecided on the engine color, I'm leaning towards satin black with gloss valve covers and belt covers. Yet silver with the same black highlights might look good too. I'm getting rid of all the chrome around the forks and gauges, fenders will be painted red, with black stripe like a CBX.

Seems you've done a lot of ground work for this one. Keep the pics coming, it should be interesting.

My vote is to keep it as close to stock as possible as there are so very few of the sulpher yellows around.
I'm also kind of partial to the Yellow/silver/black.

Okay, put the carbs back in and it runs with no leaks. I did install my CB750F coils too while I had things apart. I think the previous owner did some tinkering to mask the carb issues. Like jack with the points and the timing. So I did the quick Randakk split timing deal, but I think I'm off a bit. I'll have to check it again tomorrow. I synchronized the carbs, but that was just to get them close. I'm pretty sure it's a timing issue as she runs a little rough at idle and the revs don't settle down quickly and she wants to stall.

I will tell you that the carb floats are dead nuts on at 22mm, the primary and secondary air jets are in the right spots, the primary and secondary jets are right and the Vacuum piston bores have been polished and are smooth as butter. I've even rebuilt the air cut off.

Look at the coil mounting, I cut the snorkel off the air cleaner inlet and plan on running a hose to grab some fresh air from forward of the radiator. The coils only required some wiring to attach to the existing harness. I never like to alter things (or hack it) far from orig. I make it easy to go back to stock.

Anyway here are some pics.

Glowing Docs works like a charm! I troubleshot the electrics per the manual to make sure it wasn't the gauges.

I'm curious to know if these bikes are too heavy for those shocks you picked out? I read somewhere that they are only rated for bikes up to 500 lbs. But that just might have been that particular model. If they are working I'd be curious to know how you like them. I REALLY like the Ohlins shocks but me wallet does not.

I haven't installed them yet but they are rated for:

Working stoke: 68mm Max load: 300 kgs 9( 640 lbs) I hope that's for both springs because if they are each it will be too stiff. Because the rear doesn't support the whole weight of the bike and is balance front to rear.

I have had lots of shock, works, ohlins, progressives, and fox so my expectations are not very high for these. They are rated by the spring and I'm sure the damping isn't adjusted for the added spring rates.
