Re: CAFE MAXIMUS
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just caught up with this thread.
Fantastic result and I'm so pleased to have been a very small part of it. Your bike looks magnificent and that was a great way to have the first start-up, with the whole family involved; especially good that the kids had the first go! Wonderful!
(I see why you were in such a hurry for the brake bits now)

Re: CAFE MAXIMUS
Just fast forward about 10 years and the kids are watching this again and ask you why you turned the kill switch to ON after their tries!
Does your son say "It loves you, Dad!" at the end?
That is priceless!!!

Re: CAFE MAXIMUS
Thanks Oldewing! I intend to !! :D
John, you've played no small part ! You were there in my hour of greatest need - without the bearings you scouted from far and wide, this bike would have ended up in the junkyard!
I'm glad I could involve my wonderfull family, they've been so patient and forgiving - this build has cost a lot, not only in monetary terms, but it really has eaten into my family time too much and I have some making up to do......
Wog - you saw my sneaky trick huh ?! Funny thing is, if I tried something like that with the iPad, I would have been bust in a second

Re: CAFE MAXIMUS
I just watched your video of startup. Very exciting. I felt the same way after pulling
my heads last year to do head gaskets. I was surprised my bike ran too., after being in pieces
all over my garage. I'm not a mechanic, just an old retired salesman.
Really enjoyed watching, fantastic job, wonderful supportive family.

Thanks Gowing
Planning to take it real easy on the street, not exceeding around 3500-4000rpm. Thinking highway might be best, sorta constant speed ?
Just need to sort a few niggles out first.
Any advice on the break-in process?

They always used to say very the rpm. Don't put it under a heavy load. As in don't lug the engine at low rpm. No steady rpm for more than 10 or 20 miles or so.
That being said. When I rebuild an engine I heat cycle it 2 or 3 times. Then call it good. Never had any problems with them doing this.

Re: CAFE MAXIMUS
Well that's encouraging, I did about three heat cycles before going on two short rides around the neighborhood (about 7 miles total)
Once I get the fan switch replaced & working will go on a proper ride, but still plan on keeping rpm low and taking it easy for the first 1000km.
When do you guys suggest I change oil & filters ? was thinking 500km (360miles) then 1000 km after that again (730 miles)
Heel hartelijk bedankt Blubber
I would love to do a BMW airhead next, but even if I had the finances (which i certainly don't after this build ) , I would have to name the next project bike "Divorce" or at the very least "Domestic Violence" - my loving wife is not ready for another 18 months of neglect

Re: CAFE MAXIMUS
I do the first oil change a little earlier on a complete tear down. I go 200 miles or so. No matter how clean you have things when they go back together there is still some stuff in there.
But you are close thinking the 360 miles.
The second oil change is just like normal. All of the loose stuff from a rebuild will come out with the first oil and filter change.

Re: CAFE MAXIMUS
Made a number plate bracket (copied Crashdown's mounting, thanks bro ), and ordered a pair of stainless steel pistons for the front brakes ( USD 27 each from HVC Cycle - great service and a great price me thinks), so they're also finally on and the bike is now street legal
Done about 50 km so far, taking it easy, couple of teething problems as to be expected.
I am just loving seeing this machine in one piece again, alive, and being able to ride it at long last
