My Project GL1200A
Hi all
I purchased an 85 Aspy. about 4 years ago from a friend at work. Unfortunately it was plagued with problems; it sat in his shed for about 4 years and immediately needed caliper work, after a few trips I noticed electrical problems cropping up (radio, CB, under shelter wiring) after several attempts at tracing down and replacing (rinse and repeat) we went on a 2 hour trip up-north to go to a German restaurant we frequent. 30 min. from our destination we hit a rest stop the final straw was added (stator went) got a jump start and headed home, parked it in the shed and went out and purchased a 2006 GL18.
The bike sat in the shed all last year and most of this year, I flirted with restoring it, parting it out or smashing it out of frustration Then about a month ago I came across an old article featuring Lars/octane's Bulldog Bobber, I was instantly smitten after browsing the gallery of all the great looking bikes I also spotted Robert*s GL1200 Street Fighter now I am inspired! I joined your board a few weeks ago and have already gotten some great help from Oldewing, Easter and Sunnbobb so far.
So... Here is the project! Here it is on its way to no longer being a tourer! Today I managed to fit the new fuel tank Cover/Shelter I purchased for $25 And stripped seat pan and cut a foot off the back end to reupholster. So this is where I am today Sunnbobb is hooking me up with a set of Clubman handlebars, I just need to get back with him on payment and shipping. Looking into lights and gauges now.

That's some good progress and a bike well worth recovery.
Seems we may have to move this thread to CustomZ.

Re: My Project GL1200A
The electrics will still need sorted, but isn't it a lot more fun to work on when you have the 1800 for a reliable ride in the interim? You may find corrosion, bad splices, burnt wires, incorrect wiring. Sort it and repair it well, and this bike should end up just as reliable!

Re: My Project GL1200A
I assumed this was a project, that's why I posted in this thread! However, you are an admin :O
Thank you for the encouragement, I am tearing out the motor today, Fingers X.
Yes pidjones, I love the 1800, but I do like the challenge of doing a project!
The electrics are probably going to be my biggest part of the project, I do know how to follow flow charts so it should be no trouble!

Re: My Project GL1200A
Got a bit of work done today, managed to get the wiring harness out and finally got the seat pan and foam cut the way I want it. Went to joann fabrics and picked up a square of foam and some spray glue to raise the height a bit and fill in where the old foam is worn and should be ordering some 360 stretch vinyl to complete seat next week.
Was unsure how to make the lines right from tank to side covers, however, I looked closely at the covers and saw that cutting was an easy solution and broke out the dremel and just made a straight cut along top and it looks great Will get the line cleaned up before paint

I would like to see a picture with the tank on. I am liking the way this one is going. Will keep my eye on this one.

Re: My Project GL1200A
Got some pics today with tank on, still need to get left and right matched up and clean up the cut but they look much better.
@sunbobb Yup got the clubmans! I sent a PM explaining the problem with the riser clamps being 1" the stock bars were 1' and tapered at the end to 7/8" for controls. I picked up a piece of 16g steel to possibly make shims and thinking of making a beauty plate for back of seat and taillight.
Have seat trimmed up the way I want it and need to ad some foam to top then upholster!
Question: What kind of body filler do I use on plastic foe the side covers?
Right Side Left Side Clubmans Space problem
