I would like to make some eventually, but these work nicely.

I am on a zero budget so I built mine this weekend. Almost everything that is custom I built in my garage. These are my rough starts. I need to get them all purdy an all.

so, are the pickup tubes just open in the tank? now i'm interested. any more pics?
Yes, the tubes are just open in the tank, I was going to try to make some screens to put on them, but I read that the Por15 sealer can clog them up. I think my setup will keep sediment that builds up in the bottom of the tank from entering the fuel lines. Here is a quick sketch that I made.

Sorry, I thought I took more pictures of the tank project, here is one before I treated the tank. It shows the pick up tubes a little better.

I cut the handlebar mounts off my stock triple tree with a hack saw and then ground them down with a flap wheel on my angle grinder until I thought I was close to breaking through (they are cast and are hollow underneath the handlebar mounts). I then sanded them down smooth, then bead blasted and polished them. I opened up the gauge mounting holes to receive the choke and a green light (the green light is a filler, I still haven't decided what to hook it up to, any ideas?) The stock ignition wasn't going to work with the scheme so I found this barrel key at an electronics store. I like it because the key can be removed in the on position so my keychain doesn't scratch up my shiny triple

My stock master cylinder hit the fork tube with the new clip-ons so I found the one I have on ebay and gave the top cover the polish treatment.

Here is a picture that might make it a little more clear.

That is really inspired stuff man. I hope you live by the adage that "Imitation is the highest form of flattery", as I prefer that over being called a "plagiarist". :)

So, any know if the control from the earlier bikes will fit an 81 Wing? They changed over to plastic housings in the next gen wings apparently, and I'd prefer to polish the housings like you.

What a sweet bike. I love the silver gl1000 plate around the custom fuel gauge. Was this made or did you buy it?

Beautiful job. This is the first time I've seen the thread.

Could you post a vid of the bike running as it is, with the mufflers?
Sounds very snarly with the straight pipes but I think the Gendarmerie would be unenthusiastic if I try this route....

Your bike is "really great" looking machine. During a Cafe pic web search, your pic was one that was included. It really made me inspired to build one for myself. I just posted my first posting this morning on my '77 GW project. Thanks for the inspiration!

Any of the sealers will clog up screens and tubes. If you just use small amounts of POR15 and only add
enough to do the job, you'll be OK. Keep it moving until it sets and have the air hose handy (just in case).

Your bike looks awesome! :orange

The key switch is a barrel style key switch. If you do a google search you can find similar ones. I found mine at a local electronics store. I'm not sure who makes it. I had to run it to a relay to get it to work properly.

Thanks for the compliment. I made the plate. I used the original as a template and then glued some thin aluminum to a piece of particle board with 3M super77 and cut it out with my scroll saw. I then sanded it to the exact shape. Before I took it off the particle board I polished it. I then soaked the board and aluminum in acetone to separate them. I then designed the new logo and cut it out on my wife's vinyls cutter. I laid down my mask on the aluminum and then sandblasted the exposed areas to create the decal. It took a while but I really like the way it turned out.

Try this

I posted a video with the mufflers on. It still sounds mean, but not as loud.

Thanks!

I got the rear shocks from a friend. Not sure on the exact make or size. They are almost identical to the height of the stock shocks. They are quite a bit stiffer, which is why my friend was getting rid of them. I like them though.

Favorite wing to date. I love the fuel tank mod and the handle bar setup

I prefer the look of your muffler setup to the straight pipes myself. Perfect cafe profile, I think the side covers were worth the effort

Extremely well done
