Think I'm going in this direction instead.
Should allow me to make them a little bit shorter.

Great to keep these old 'Wings flying on down the road.

Re: Wog's '78 Wild Child build
For anyone still following along...
I got another old machine running again so I can cut the angles correctly (and safely). Here's were I'm at with the mounting. With this style, I can keep the carbs aligned left to right instead of having the right side in front because of the engine layout.
After seeing if it all works with the longer intakes, I'll make a cover that mimics the side "gas tank" profile to somewhat hide the intakes... Plan on forming it from aluminum and probably powder coating it flat black instead of polishing. Also having a cutout in the top center to mimic the valve cover and mainly to keep someone from "adjusting" the carb screws.
Also plan on going with the OEM manifolds for the intakes instead of V-stacks. Cut and re-weld them to plates to match the carbs. Not sure if I'll keep the rubber boots or attach filters directly to the front of the aluminum.
Any input, thoughts, comments is appreciated.

I'll be curious to see how this all works. You'll get a bit of ram air effect at higher speeds so jetting will probably need to richened up some. The air flow through the manifolds could be interesting. Some pretty abrupt changes in flow there.

Re: Wog's '78 Wild Child build
Just googled that, thanks. This example doesn't come up and back down again but I can imagine what you mean. They keep the curves instead of my 45 degree angles, but seems like a lot of distance.??ericheath wrote:snip... Subaru runners sweep down and then back up and down again. I don't mind finishing this with the way I'm heading, but always willing to change it as I go along. Not heading for a high-performance type build. Just wrenching and having fun.

Re: Wog's '78 Wild Child build
I've envisioned a cross ram type setup with Weber (or other) side draft carbs to keep a lower profile. Haven't researched it at all, however...

Been-a-while update.
Wish there was a easy way to rotate picture attachments via the website.
Mine seem to always be uploaded sideways, but you guys said you like pictures

Re: Wog's '78 Wild Child build
Was going with the V-stacks, and having a rain cover option stored inside the "gas tank". But now leaning towards keeping the ram style cover on permanently. I can just see some nice person pouring a beer down one for kicks or here in FL, a couple lovebugs getting sucked in. Playing around with different styles. The rear will be closed and front having a foam filter with protective screen.

Re: Wog's '78 Wild Child build
Latest is 4" diameter alum tube formed with my ironworker (sideways, I gave up rotating )
This way it's a little more oval at the rear.
First picture I went too far with the pressure on the second piece.
Second pic, got it right.

Cut the two holes, make the front cover, weld the rear plate, and probably install an adjustable damper in the middle to control flow to the rear intake.

Crazy how tall that intake/carb/intake stack is. Put some lights in there and you could do away with the turn signals!

Cagers and most bikers here don't use turn signals anyway.txtriathlete wrote:Crazy how tall that intake/carb/intake stack is. Put some lights in there and you could do away with the turn signals!
But almost half the distance of what it was...
