Re: **Finished (for now)** My 75 Wing Cafe RestoMod
Ah man! That is so sad, sorry for the damage man! That is a gorgeous bike, and it's horrible to see a labor of love get damaged like that!
That being said... I'm a fan of the for ok conversion idea to the cbr, or gsxr? Either way, I think not would look great! I've been thinking of that conversion for mine, and I think our cage gl1000's could totally pull it off. Winters coming up in the next couple of months anyway, could be decent timing to get the bike back in the garage.
Again man, sorry for the accident, glad you're okay, but that sucks that happened to the bike =(

Sorry to hear about the prang, but as others have said, so glad you're ok. The Wing will live on and your passion for it will bring it round again to another phase.
Hang in there and don't get too bummed about it. It could've been worse.
Keep us posted on the revamp and fly the Wing again!
Cheers

Bikes can be repaired or replaced. Bodies are a bit more troublesome. But it is a sharp bike so I understand your frustration.
Bikes at present:

And a slightly worse for the wear BMW GS adventure bike awaiting repair

First off... Glad you are OK.
We hate to think how these things can go, 'cause we know how these things can go.
Second...as has been said. You're at the Mecca of spare parts here. Stuff can be fixed.
but Third.... Bully for you man!! You lacerated the Kahh-rap outta that front door

Thanks everyone! It's a bummer and I'm still working through the insurance process but the fact I'm ok and walked away from that is definitely the important part.
Haha! If nothing else we know a well built wing makes a heck of a battering ramHOTT wrote: ...

Re: **Finished (for now)** My 75 Wing Cafe RestoMod
Heard back from insurance this week and was offered a pretty good payout based on the valuation of the bike. So that means the front end swap over the winter is a definite go
I've been doing a ton of research the last few weeks on possible options and I think I've come up with an USD front end swap that will eliminate the issue of the forks being shorter as well as be fairly straight foward. As far as I can tell, the stock fork length is 785mm from axle to top with a 45mm offset. The avg of newer USD forks seems to be around 695 - 725mm and a 25-30mm offset. Paired with a smaller front tire, that would work out to a drop of almost 3" and change the rake and trail a lot. Not feasible for my build, especially as I already raised the back end. BUT, I discovered that a 2000 / 2001 Honda RC51 SP1 had 765mm long fork tubes with a 35mm offset and they will fit in a similar years top triple clamp from a CBR954RR, which looks like this: I'm having trouble finding any solid dimensions for the drop, but the 954's clip ons mounted above the top clamp, so I'd estimate it to be in the 25mm or 1" range. So if I slide the forks all the way down that would put the total length of the new front end at 790mm, right around stock. The wheel base, ride height and rake will stay almost the same as stock but the trail will change a bit. And since the RC51 and CBR954 have the same diameter steering stem as the GL, it should just be a matter of pressing in the GL's to get the right length. I'll have to put stiffer springs in the forks, but they seem like very good units (and the gold should go nicely with my paint).
As for the front wheel, I had considered putting a 5 spoke CBR wheel on and changing out my rear to a Lester so they sort of matched...but I really like the look of the spokes, so I think I am going to probably look into using something like this:
https://cognitomoto.com/collections/for ... aced-wheel
and having my stock 19" rim laced to it (or an after market rim). This of course means that I will no longer have a speedo drive, so I will have to figure that out. I'll probably end up with an all in one electronic Acewell or the like and sell off the ones I've got now. Maybe even pull the fuel gauge out of the shelter and flush mount it there...
It'll take me a while to pull all the various parts together, the RC51's especially are getting hard to come by, but at least I have a path forward and a project for the fall / winter.

Yikes!
If there is one thing I have learned throughout this process it is this: Check your respirator for spiders before you put it on.

Turn them the right way and it would be like raking the front end.Easter wrote:What? I don't see the problem!

Can't wait to see where this goes! Especially adding in the all electronic speedometer and what not. Glad the forks took the brunt of the damage in the end. Cheers!
