Been awhile on this build, but back at it.
Had a chance to go back out to Croom Motorcycle Area. Most of the trails looked good, but just so happens that I got a great deal on a pair of Continental TKC 80 tubeless tires.
So I'm gonna go with them instead. Should really help in the loose sand. Hope to get most of the front end done this week.
Been awhile on this build, but back at it.
Had a chance to go back out to Croom Motorcycle Area. Most of the trails looked good, but just so happens that I got a great deal on a pair of Continental TKC 80 tubeless tires.

Looks like fun. Haven't seen trails like that since I left Michigan. Still not sure I would try them on a Wing--trail tires or not!!

The few folks I've told about this build said the same thing. Won't make it at Croom.
Too big, too heavy. ..
Never had (always wanted) an Enduro bike as a kid.

I haven't seen enough of Croom to know for sure but I think you will be fine as long as you don't have to pick it back up!! Handling in really narrow bits may be a problem also. But this bike will do great in the wide open stuff with no logs to jump and no swamps to wade. My favorite riding in Northern Michigan was always the two tracks with long sweeping curves and uphills that let you do a gentle wheelie when you peaked over. I used to ride a Penton (predecessor to the KTM for you kids) and spent a fair amount of time on the trails used for the infamous "Jackpine" trials races. Don't know if it is still run or not but that was more torture than fun. But I was a 20 something then so that was what I was looking for. Looking forward to your ride report.

The good thing about these Wings is that if they go over and you have suitable cylinder head protection, they wont go right over and will just end up sitting on the engine cover protection at about 20 degrees off horizontal. Making them a lot easier to pick up than you'd think. I've thought about this a lot! Look at the GS as an example, I've picked these up a bit too, including the GSA!
I cant wait to see your finished project, it's coming together nicely. As an aside, I covered about 20 miles of unsurfaced gravel roads yesterday, solid as a rock, stable as a lot of other ''dual sports'' I've ridden...

I lay mine down all the time when I'm working on it. Don't have a lift, work in my driveway so it makes it easier to get at without crawling on the ground.
Picking it up is much easier than crawling around under it.

Looking forward to getting this "done".
I don't have a problem picking up a GL on a solid surface.
But I will be out there alone while riding.
Will have the winch installed on the front to pull out of being stuck.
Plenty of trees all over to hook to.
Have thought of incorporating a couple quick-release mounts on both sides so that I could use a spare
DC actuator to lift it. Would have a large surface base plate with cleats on the bottom. This one has a push load of 1350lbs, plenty for this situation.
With the base plate, it only adds about 6lbs to my load.
Also planning on having some rear tip-over bars behind the side aux gas tanks that will help it from going too far.
Those will also be good in protecting my legs from the fish mufflers if (when) I go down.
Looking forward to getting this "done".

Now that looks AGGRESSIVE !!!! The advice about riding in the dirt reminds me of when @20 YO I would ride my Ariel Square 4 on dirt tracks. Had a lot of fun.
