Re: GL1100 Flat Tracker
Freezing works for a short time for me. The grinder warms the foam pretty fast. A flap disc sander doesn't grab as much for me, but you can't bear down much. A dusty mess----like polishing aluminium.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I looked for that pic before I posted. Good use of inner fender.

Re: GL1100 Flat Tracker
So today I decided to put the front brake together. I didn't want to do that 'til after the tires were mounted but I'm tired of waiting. All I did was redrill the 1100 rotor and bolt it to the 1000 hub. You might not be able to see down in there, but the gap looks pretty close the to same on both sides. I think all that really matters is that the rotor doesn't rub on the caliper. This wheel setup is all 1000 parts except the rotor and a spacer I made to replace the speedo drive. The forks and caliper are 1100.
Happy New Year everyone!
I didn't like the way the throttle cable worked so I re-routed it way up high. It's above the frame all the way and works much better. This is where it comes out above the frame and lines up pretty good with the carb linkage.
If the tires ever get here(they are period correct[Firestones?]coming from Coker Tire,I could bolt the Darkwing seat on and ride it! I'm sort of "living with" the new seat,I.m not totally comfortable with the shape I have roughed out,it puts me a little too far forward. On a real flat tracker you essentially sit on the tank but this is a "wannabe" and I don't want to build something too uncomfortable.Happy New Year everyone!

Re: GL1100 Flat Tracker
No,as long as it's on the table with no tires and wheels it won't be! It's not that I in any way doubt my carb work,it's just that if (God Forbid!) something should go wrong it would take a long time to get the cherry picker, lift it down and move it outside. I'm gonna wait! I'll hook up an auxiliary tank for the first couple of times so I won't have a gas tank to add to the conflagration! As far as I know Murphy hasn't been loaded on a Mars shuttle so we'll err on the side of caution, just this once!ericheath wrote:Has it been fired up yet?

Re: GL1100 Flat Tracker
This is how it looked with the tools I used to make it that way. The grinder is a light duty unit that can either spin like a regular sander or if you unlock the spindle it sorta vibrates. For foam work it spins and requires a light touch. I had the 4 1/2"Makita angle grinder out for a little while but it's way too aggressive! The flat looking thing is a board cut to fit the sandpaper that goes on the air inline sander. I tried 220 grit but it was pretty slow now it has 80 grit on it and makes short work of the lumps and bumps the electric knife leaves. The foam is the firmest stuff I could get except for a bullnose of about 1" I glued on the front with the idea it would help with contour and maybe make the stretching a little more controllable. I'm not sure it worked?
I fastened the ends first and then worked my way down the sides. Then I went back and redid the ends to try to clean it up a little. I'm not sure that worked either! The final product. It has only a passing resemblance to the picture I had in my mind.I did the seat on the Ascot in a similar manner and it turned out much better. Some of the difference was in the fabric, that one was some fabric I inherited when I bought the sewing machine. It was probably twice as thick as the stuff I bought for this project. I think size matters! The color match isn't too bad and it looks pretty good in 20-20 vision.(20 mph from 20 feet)Proud member of the NGW Cartel

Re: GL1100 Flat Tracker
Some finishing touches. I took one inner fender installed in the normal manner and then reversed another and cut it right where it gets wide by the battery box, reversed it and pop riveted to the normal one. A couple of zip ties in the battery box area helps hold the fender and the starter solenoid in place. All the regular stuff went away when we trimmed down her derriere. I bought a smaller battery and made a smaller tray to mount it in.
It came out about 1/2 way down the Darkwing license plate mount, just about perfect! We're real close to done, all the lights work,I have spark at the plugs, the body is about as good as I can get it,other than some adjustment to the shelter pieces. Currently the alignment of all the pieces is somewhat less then perfect. In mid-Nov. Coker said 4-6 weeks for the tires so they could come anytime, right?Proud member of the NGW Cartel

Re: GL1100 Flat Tracker
No tires my attention turns to snow tires. We take the Orange bike from it's home on the porch, down the sidewalk to the garage................
I originally built the hack for the Ascot but it moved on to a better life where it is in the stable of the guy who owns the bike shop in Elko. The Orange bike wore the hack winter of 14-15 but we didn't have any snow last year so it stayed single all winter, We have some snow this year!
through 6" of snow, but only for about 10 feet........... and there's just enough room to get it and the sidecar in behind the Hotrod! I dug the hack out of the snow yesterday morning and it's all melted off. So if anyone wondered about "snow tires" for a motorcycle they look just like any other tire, there's just one more of 'em. Right Bob?I originally built the hack for the Ascot but it moved on to a better life where it is in the stable of the guy who owns the bike shop in Elko. Did you have a build thread on the hack Ron? I don't remember hearing about it.
