Sorry to hear that! glad you weren't hurt and the bike wasn't too badly damaged. I just went through that myself

Re: Buffet Racer: Propav8r's '78 GL1000
Well, we're back on the road with a few improvements...
I installed Randakk's oil filter adapter last night. This was a godsend, since the threads in my front cover were pretty gnarly from a hamfisted PO. Every time I put the filter housing back on, I was worried about stripping threads, and a couple times, I saw threads come out with the bolt when I was changing the oil. With the filter adapter, I never have to worry about stripping the threads again, and oil changes are much quicker and cleaner.
The second thing I did was install my replacement forks. They came with these neat little caps that allow me to adjust air pressure, so I plumbed that all up and added a gauge for entertainment.
And finally, I got around to installing my braided brake lines. I still can't believe the improvement this made to my brakes. No more spongy lever or impossible to bleed junction block. I just threw a double banjo on the master cylinder outlet and bled the system thoroughly. My brakes are tenfold better now than they used to be.

Great updates, the braided lines are on my to-do list.

Guess I need to do that one too.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Finished reading your thread last night.
I enjoyed it very much.
Thanks for documenting your experience.
Hope to see more ride reports after the repairs.

Man, time flies! I've been on this board a year already.
The bike is back to running/riding great. I honestly can't tell a huge difference in the front suspension. I'm running 10 psi of air pressure in the forks at the moment. I did find a micro bicycle tire pump to carry with me to adjust pressure on the fly.
It's a little chilly this weekend to really enjoy riding (upper 30s/low 40s) but it should warm up a little this week and give me one last hurrah before probably 3 months of seriously cold weather.

Took a long weekend run from my home in the mountains all the way to Wilmington, NC, and back home again. All in, it was 969 miles. The bike ran like a champ the whole way, without even a hint of problem. Plenty of time cruising at 80-90mph on the highway too.

It's not bad once your butt goes numb, which happens after about 2 hours.RAT wrote:How did that Darkwing seat work out on a longer ride ?

Looks like it has room to move around a bit, maybe a cheap gel pad from Walmart would extend the comfort zone a bit ....

Love the build, but I must say associating it with margaritaville.......does the bike to little justice:P
Really like the black enginecovers with the silver accents, really ties it together well!

Re: Buffet Racer: Propav8r's '78 GL1000
Well as the months and miles have gone by, I've started to notice some clutch slip. I adjusted the cable in as far as I dared to eliminate preload, and I've changed the oil. The issue persists, so after 40 years, it's time for a clutch.
I purchased EBC heavy duty friction plates, EBC HD springs, and Barnett drive steels. I realize I *probably* could have reused the steels, but I have plans for this bike....
The idea of a turbo GL has been kicking around in my head for some time. I've got a lot of the pieces needed to make it happen, including a spare motor. I've ordered some cast GL1500 manifolds to see if the port spacing lines up. If so, injector bungs can be welded into those manifolds. A Microsquirt can get RPM signal from the Dyna ignition, and that'll handle fuel and ignition out of the microsquirt.
Could be fun. We'll see.

Re: Buffet Racer: Propav8r's '78 GL1000
The 1500 manifolds are a lot smaller I.D. than stock 1000 manifolds. So even if they bolt on there will be a big step from the 1500 manifolds to the 1000 intake ports. It will do weird things to the intake charge.
