Speedo showed up in today's mail so mounted and wired up the idiot lights. Seemed to have it all wired correctly but when I went to start it up nothing would happen except some blinking error lights on the M-unit. Long story short, the battery was down to less than 9 volts. Now the question is did I have it turned on long enough to discharge it while working, or did it discharge while I rode it the five or so miles last evening to the gas station and back? At this point I just don't know what caused it. It is on the slow charger and should be charged in the morning. If it discharges again while riding, I will have a problem! Maybe the mufflers will arrive tomorrow and I can get this thing wrapped up.

Sometime in the near future I will start a thread on my next project. An 85 1200 Interstate going naked. Here are a couple of pictures by way of introduction. It is just about this point in my new builds that "stage fright" takes over and I consider a new hobby. :IDTS:

Still waiting on mufflers and speedo cable. I am also waiting on a regulator/rectifier as my little red battery is now a paper weight. I confirmed that due to overcharging (details in another thread) my battery is cooked and the rec/reg must be replaced as well. I have a good standard type sealed battery so i reinstalled the battery box and rerouted the cables to their conventional location. Everything works fine this way but I had plans for the spot where the battery goes so that will change now that the battery is back. I have ordered an aftermarket reg/rec that is designed to fit the CBR600. I will keep a close eye on the charge rate but that series is recommended as a more modern replacement for the stock item. I intend to get some photos of the license plate holder installed. I think (?) I like it but I am interested in some feedback. It may be a few days as I am headed back to Houston tomorrow.

New rec/reg arrived today and I got it installed and checked out. Steady 12.6 Volts at all rpm. Battery was fully charged to start with so hopefully it will kick up a bit more if the battery gets run down a bit. The rest of the parts arrived as well so I hope to get the muffs installed tomorrow. I took it for a short run and it starts instantly and has good power but there is a lot of mid-range popping and snorting that I hope will go away with some back pressure. If not, I will have to check the sync.

Uhh, a steady 12.6V is no charge at all. A fully charged battery with no alternator input should put out about 12.56V. It sounds like there's something not quite right in the charging system. Is the battery flat?

Curiosity got the best of me. Battery is showing 13.04 V resting, after about 5 miles earlier today.

It will show slightly higher just after coming off a charge, but the resting voltage should pretty quickly settle at just over 12.5V.

Mounted the muffs today and took it for a fifteen mile run. Battery was showing 12.64 after I returned. Still running a bit ragged but mufflers definitely helped, they do have baffles but I think I will try to pack them with some fiberglass matte that I took out of the Sportster mufflers I cut up a while back. The baffles are removable so I plan to just wrap the baffle and reinstall. Too loud for my taste. I think a carb sync will also help. My fan has been working but it did not seem like it was coming on today. Will have to check into that further. There are a few other items to sort but unless something serious shows up I am going to call this "fini" (had a college roommate that had taken Latin and liked to throw phrases around to impress us.) shakehands

Anyway here are some photos of the finished project. License plate was borrowed for the ride and looks pretty ratty! The leather mail pouch was intended to fit into the frame but after I had to move the battery back into its regular location it now covers the battery (mostly) but does stick out a bit. Still i think it will be OK.

She may have come out of a dumpster but she developed some pretty expensive tastes before I was finished! My wife wants to know if I am ready to post her for sale. Not likely to make any money on this one. :IDTS:

Looks great. I like the shorties. Probably a tad loud.

Looks awesome, nice work! I have the same shorties on mine with even shorter headers and it is definitely not quiet. Interested to see how repacking the baffles goes for you

I pulled the baffles out to wrap with some good old Harley D fiberglass and found that they already had some in them! But I will go ahead and add a bit more just to be sure there is enough. :IDTS:
