You know there's more to it than just pour it in the tank and go right?dontwantapickle wrote:snip.......... oxygenated fuel.

Re: 76 GL1000 final gearing upgrade question for WFO speed
I have both swingarms and rearends laying around in my shop. I'll take a look at the p0ssibilities tomorrow and report backdontwantapickle wrote:Yes, having spent years involved in the dirt track scene, I am familiar with racing fuels.
But........ what I don't know is if a 1200 final drive will bolt up to a 1000 swingarm.
That's the question that I posted in this thread and really the reason I joined this forum.
I figured that a forum about customizing goldwings would be the best place to find an answer to my question
and although I have received plenty of replies, ericheath is the only one who has stayed on topic.
I'll gladly talk racing anytime (and what you guys think won't work),
but right now I am specifically interested in taller gearing for my GL1000.

Re: 76 GL1000 final gearing upgrade question for WFO speed
No easy way to make a 1200 final fit a 1000 swingarm. The 1200 final has four bolts to attach to the swingarm, the 1000 has three. The drive shafts are different as well.
The 1200 swingarm will help your "insane" wfo goal as it will add a little length (3- 3 1/2") and hopefully wfo stability. I did it by grinding as much as I could off both the 1200 swingarm and the mating points of the 1000 frame. It lacks proper sealing but works. The 1100 and 1200 swingarms used different pivot pins than the 1000. I had my 1000 pins turned down to the diameter to fit the 1200 swingarm. (The 1100/1200's had smaller pivot pins than the 1000.)
Another tack taken by Sandy and a few others is to have a brass bushing turned to fit the difference.
I have no pics of mine. But you will see what I mean when you get the swingarm.
The one slight negative to it is the 1200's had the rear wheel offset to the left about 1/2". Using the swingarm will push the tire pretty close to the upper frame and fender mounts.
I'll see if I can get some pics. I'm pretty much a hack and I rely on the above guys and others here to chime in and keep me alive. So far, they're doing well.
Some may correct what I've written. I hurried it tonight.

Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I agree with everything you said, and mating the driveshaft is also some machine work. But as I have always said" anything can be done with enough time,...and money"

Re: 76 GL1000 final gearing upgrade question for WFO speed
The difference is close to a wash when you figure the 15" wheel for the 2.83 final and the 16" or even 17" wheel for the 3.09 final. 80-81 years had a 17" comstar rim. It was only a 2.5" rim, but with what you're after, that might be your best bet. It gives you some options. The 1200 swingarm can easily be made to accept a 1500 final drive ( also 2.83:1) and rim which is 16" and 3.5" wide rim, but it looks like it adds a lot of weight, ( bigger final, bigger axle, bigger brake rotor, bigger rim) which may go against what you're attempting.
I was worried about the offset, but if everything is true and the wheels are in parallel planes, it shouldn't be a problem. The 1200's were known to be stable at high speed, more than the 1000 or 1100's and the offset is on the stock 1200 bikes. Forks may have been part of that.
There's a complicated way of using strings to check how close to perfect the wheels and bike are together in plane. I spent a few hours checking mine out and it's within a degree, which according to the author was close enough for racebikes. I forget the guys name.
I just haven't had the nerve to push mine to see what it will do. Some is from fear of the law, and some is fear of what could happen should something go wrong or the bike decided to give a tank slapper.
FYI, 1000 and 1100 bikes had a circlip on the output shaft of the motor to keep the drive shaft in place. The 1200 don't have a circlip, but use a spring on the final drive end to keep the shaft in place. All three will fit the 1000 output shaft from the motor.
