stripped 84 aspy help/build thread

#1

Post by 84aspybobber »

Got my 84 torn down thanks for the add guys. I'm going to be stripping this down to bare essentials. Post up some awesome naked 1200s I'll add questions as I go... I want 10.5 inch lowering shocks out back and non air fork tubes... What should I go with?? Wanna add a new keyed ignition on the frame and a manual pull choke cable some direction would be greatly appreciated guys

Be careful of too much lowering, it adds undue stress to the CV joint in the drive shaft causing it to fail early.

So does anyone know how much is too low for the CV joint? And I seen something about a clevis one end of the shocks? Which kind of shocks do I need for the rear? I want to go as low as possible I measured and I'd like to put it at 11 inches from top to bottom shock mount..as for forks I want to get rid of air...the seals are shot. I'd like to put some new fork tubes on it. I seen something about 41mm tubes...any input... Thanks for the reply

The 1200 does not use clevis style shocks. Eyelets on both ends.

To go airless, you just need to either replace the top caps or remove the valves and plug the hole.
Rebuilding the tubes is not that difficult unless you get one of the retainer rings stuck in its groove.
Ideally the CV should not flex much beyond level to 4 degrees offset up and down.

You have 41mm tubes if it’s an 84. A set of Progressive springs will work fine without air since it’s just a bobber. I tried welding the holes shut for the air, but one weld wasn’t good enough and it would allow small amounts past. I just plugged the holes and put the balancer pieces back on. There are two orings that seal it. Be careful removing them, the year pretty easily and are a specialty size.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Been too long but I have pulled the bike in the shop after it sitting like this for way too long. Took the swing arm off this evening, got the motor almost ready to come out to freshen it up,, gonna tear the bike down completely and start from scratch Gonna go with an 11 inch rear shock and I would like to see if anyone knows of a fork swap that will also lower the front end, or should I just rebuild these air forks with progressive springs, I scour over the few different forums and not many people Bob an aspencade, so I'm gonna be going through alot of trial and error I guess, thanks for any input ahead of time

As far as lowering the front end with a fork swap….it can certainly be done, but it takes a fair amount of work to fit the original front wheel to newer forks.

If you don’t care about wheels so much, a Suzuki Hayabusa front end goes on pretty darn easy, and lowers the front end.

Thanks a whole bunch! Does it matter what year busa to pull from if you know off hand.

Threw some wrenches at the bike this morning, and cleaned my shop out to make room for it(severely a.d.d) which led to organizing my scrap wood pile and other miscellaneous crap, even pressure washed a couple things but got back at it and set the frame up in the shop, waiting for a second pair of hands to get off work and give me a hand getting the motor on a stand in the shop as well

Well kept wrenching after I got the motor in the shop. Pulled the carb assembley to find water in the intake runners. So it was time to pull the heads. Bad news all around. Pretty bad pitting in two of the cylinders.

Bummer on the pitting, but a few members here have gone ahead and reassembled with head gaskets and been pleasantly surprised.

Per the fork lowering- you can slide the forks up in the triple trees and run the air balancers above the trees, but it might be a little too low. With the slightly wider 1200 motor, you don’t need to be dragging in the twisties. Easy enough to do and try it. Place a piece of carpet down and lean it over to see what hits and when.

Another option is to braze/Tig the small hole in the fork tube up that is underneath the balance tubes. That’s what I did on my Magna tubes. Then you can put them where you want and not worry about air.

I recommend a set of new Progressive springs. Robin1731 has an old how-to on shortening forks up internally a couple inches. I’ll try and find it for you. I did that and lowered two inches on my Magna shocks and still had them 3-4” up in the trees. The Magna forks were chopper style.

I went with the first gen myself….so 97?-2007. The second gen may have worked, just didn’t want to go to far off the known path.

Thank you eric I do appreciate your wisdom! So in panic mode after I felt defeated I found an 84 interstate not too far away from me for a good deal mostly all there but missing some but motor has good compression if all works out I'll have two wings! I'm super excited about this build so I'm gonna finish this one and what's left over of the two ill build another!
