There have been a few revelations since the last posting and if you're a hardcore GoldWinger you may very well be cheering by the end of this posting! action1

The big news:
There is now visual confirmation of why this bike (in my opinion) wasn't running quite right.
In spite of good compression and spark, it appears #3 cylinder isn't pulling its weight.
Using a Gunson ColorTune we see photographic evidence of #3 spark - but no corresponding combustion.
The photo below shows/compares # 3 cylinder on the left to #1 cylinder on the right:
-
Image
-
-
Using the same procedure on cylinders #2 & #4, we get an entirely different picture where spark/combustion is clearly evident:

The video clip of this (in real-time and slow-motion) is available here at this link:

-
-
The fix is likely in the carburetors (specifically number 3), so the rack is coming back off.
In addition, there's a pinhole in one of the radiator cores which will need to be addressed.
-
The real Gold Star of the day comes from the small seepage of antifreeze which has surfaced between the right-side head and the engine block.
-
Ladies and Gentlemen, grab your popcorn - this one's coming apart! :flamer

While it won’t be a bad idea to pull the heads as many of these seem to take out a gasket in a few thousand miles after lengthy sits, lots of suspected head gasket leaks are really the oring in the elbow that connects to the coolant tube. If you put your finger under the elbow and it comes up wet with coolant, you’ll know. It of course follows gravity’s pull down to the cylinder/head gasket and looks like a head gasket leak.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Yup - checked that. She's percolating up in two spots and when warmed up under pressure, the exit points are easy to see. With goggles and a snorkel - we're going in!

Mission control - we're diving in and now down near the object!

The stock rack was removed and while we were still able to generate body-heat, a trial fit of a single EMPI/Solex style carburetor and intake were trial fitted. Space on this bike is truly at a premium and even if shower rods were used for the intake runners, there still wouldn't be enough headroom with the backbone being so low:

The trial fit was a noble attempt, but for now, the factory four-carb rack has not been voted off the island and will remain.
Moving along.....
A closer look at carb #3 (which in a previous post failed to deliver fuel to cylinder #3) we witnessed a stuck needle/seat and cleaned it. We also found the following trophy pic - suitable for framing:
-
Image
-
-
That little broken end of the screw was good for about an hour and a half before it decided to give up and dislodge itself from the carburetor body.
-
Wrapping up this go-around with the stock rack, all of the air cut-off valves were inspected (in great shape) and were then disabled and buttoned up.

Don't put away the popcorn, this dive is far from over....
