GL1000 build - soon to be Fuel Injected

#1

Post by GT-Ron »

Hey guys,

Been lurking here a short while and decided to start a build thread. Hopefully it will also force me to keep momentum going on the project. You know how it can be with life keeping you busy at times....

Anyways, picked up this '75 gl1000 a year ago and it sat in my garage all this time while I'm building and renovating my house. It hasn't run in about 10 years according to the previous owner.

couple of pics of her as I got her:

Managed to start her up using starer fluid. (Fuel tank was 1/4 full of old gas. Needless to say it was nasty and rusted). Compression test checked out "ok", so I went ahead and started tearing her down:

Plan is to put her on a fair diet, and yes, fuel injection. Mainly because I know nothing about carbs, and would like the bike to be modern and reliable.

Removed the engine, removed the carbs. Valves look dirty if i look down the intake ports so heads will have to come off.

There also seems to be an oil leak from the front cover, so pulled that off too. Fuel pump is the old style but seems solid.

The oil strainer needed some effort to get out. Impact screwdriver and large hammer to be specific. NO WAY those phillips screws are going back on! The strainer itself seemed relatively clean of debris.

Original brake discs resurfaced and cross drilled by a mate. Not bad for about $75

Looking good!
Glad another one is saved. Are you planning on using the fuel injection system from a GL1200 LTD or SEI?
Great to keep these old 'Wings flying on down the road.

The plan is to use these k1200gt bmw itb’s. They can seperate into 4 individual units. Spacing is very close to the gl but I’ll need to extend the fuel rails and linkages about 5-10mm to get it spot on.

I’m using a bosch high pressure fuel pump and a local standalone engine management system to run it all.

Following with interest. Can't tell how well done the airbrush detail was done, but I LIKE it! Oh, please - throw the Phillips screwdriver bits away and buy JIS bits! This engine does NOT use Phillips screws - they are JIS and you will find they work MUCH better with the correct bits. Motion Pro makes both #2 and #3 JIS bits in 1/4" hex. I bought mine on Amazon, and use the fool out of them. With the #3 in and adapter n a Tee handle, I seldom need an impact driver on the larger ones.

Thanks. Very interesting. I live in South Africa though and i doubt I’ll find these JiS bits here. I’m just going to replace everything with allen or hex bolts where i can.

Airbrushing looks ok, but right faux tank paint is damaged, so I’ll be respraying the entire faux tank in something more modern once the mechanical side of things is completed.

JIS bits are available world-wide. Japanese Industrial Standard, I believe. And Amazon will ship!

I did the hydrochloric acid treatment on the tank. Worked well. Was nasty though and tank flash rusted afterwards. So i had it relined professionally.

They used a clear epoxy lining and i can still see the ood flash rust underneath the epoxy coating. But they assure me it is good to go now.

Hopefully they protected the intake screens.

Looking forward to watching this too. I gave up trying to understand EFI, carbs are easier.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I didn’t really check. But the new fuel pump will fit in tank so the screens are now obsolete anyways.
