Speedometer Gear Spacer?

#1

Post by Maroonandwhite »

I would like to replace the speedo gear unit on my 78 GL1000 with a spacer. This is the closest I've found for a ready-made unit, but it doesn't have dimensions. Based on the other models that it says it is compatible with, can any of you confirm that it will or definitely won't work on a GL1000? Or could be made to work with a little modification? Thanks!

This will work on the 75-77 GL1000 as most if not all the bikes listed used the same hub. But the 78-79 Comstar wheel hub is 0.25" narrower, so you would need to add a 0.125" spacer to it.

I would expect the 'Wing to have a fatter axle than the smaller bikes that is made for too.

FWIW, when I removed the speedo drives on my bikes I found axle spacers that fit (I never throw out stuff like that) and cut them down to fit, but I had access to a lathe at work at the time.

'79 CB750F had the same speedo drive as a '78 GL1000.

The page for the spacer says it is 15mm i.d. It should be easy to check the diameter of the axle to make sure it will work.

But it is still pretty expensive for a spacer...

Thanks all-- I was able to measure the speedometer gear, and it does have a 15mm ID. However, the length is 33mm, longer than I've found any ready-made axle spacer with that ID. I'm probably just going to have one made locally.

I did end up having a machine shop make me one-- nothing fancy, but it looks like it will take up the required space effectively!
