Nice progress!
The part in question is for the self cancelling directionals, IIRC...

"If you can't take the time to do it right the first time, how are you ever going to find the time to do it over?" -Unknown

Current Rides:
'Grumpy' - '81 Standard, now fully dressed.
'Layla' - '81 Standard w/dealer installed fairing and Hondaline bags.
'Scarlett' '76 'Survivor' nekkid as a j-bird!

Under Construction:
The 'Jalopy' '78-'79 Mash-up
'Quikie' '81 gl1100I back on the lift, project with the step-son!

In The Shed:
'81 gl1100I barn find aka "Josie, the farmer's daughter." (almost comatose build)
'77 gl1000, roller parts bike.
'82 gl1100I, 'Old Crusty' titled roller parts bike (free!)
'82 gl1100I, My first 'Wing, and an expensive lesson!

On a long and lonesome highway, East of Omaha, You can listen to the engine, Moanin' out his one note song,
You can think about the woman,Or the girl you knew the night before Phat GL you left at home the night before...

But your thoughts will soon be wandering, The way they always do,When you're ridin' sixteen hours,And there's nothin' much to do, And you don't feel much like ridin', You just wish the trip was through You'd rather be home wrenching cause there so much left to do...

Thoughts on gauges?

This is ugly and blocks my windshield:

Image

So what if I move the auxiliary gauges down onto the shelter lid, like on a 78? Although I might just flush mount them in the tin and not build a housing.

Image

Fuse block and radiator bottle will need to move:

Image

Not an issue for the fuses, they are all getting replaced with blade fuses once the bike is running. They can move elsewhere under the shelter pretty easily. The coolant overflow tank could move also, but what about...

Image

using one from a 70's GL1000 instead?

Image

I could probably make that work.

These gauges (or very similar) would fit with the retro theme OK and still be modern electronics.

Image

And they're small. And cheap - ish.

I'll need to make a bracket/housing for the speedo, tach, high beam, neutral and turn signal lights up above the bars but that's no big deal. I'll likely use the existing stock bracket with some modification. And get my GPS speedo I wanted.

What is required on the sender end to convert the oil dummy light and add the voltmeter?

We have a plan...

On the other end, with the Sturgis bike week rally going on this week, there was an opportunity to see lots of mechanical eye candy, which gave me some good ideas for the back end of the bike.

Once the bags are done, I'll have to build some sort of filler between the bags and the fender. And the exhaust has to poke out too.

These gave me a few ideas:

Image

Image

I think I can run the exhaust between the lower part of the bags and fender, with the ends poking out a few inches past the bags and fender to expose the fishtails. I'll glass in the gap between the fender and bags above the pipes, probably mount led brake lights in there too.

Got it cranked and running in the shop today. First time she's ran in over a decade, maybe first time this century. She was a barn find that had been sitting for at least 10 years according to PO. Still working through the boring stuff on the punch list, but now there's light.

New goal: Make her go down the road and back before the snow flies.

Brakes, engine stuff and carbs are done, rear lights are wired. Front driving lights and signals need wiring and assembly. Seat is still at upholsterer and there's no exhaust yet.

But close. Soooo close now...

Electric is done, other than swapping out the ugly gauges.
Image

Looks like a motorcycle.
Image

Those are taillight wires hanging, they aren't connected since I'm pulling the tins off soon.
Image

Squatting. The exhaust won't be that low when its done, I'll put a small S bend pipe in to pull it up closer to the frame.

It runs and drives, electric is done. Paint at some point. Bags are still a project waiting to happen. And those ugly gauges...

I like how the curves of the fishtails accent the lines on the fender and skirts. tumb2 tumb2 tumb2

Actually someone offered me cash for it not too long after my last post. I've since moved on to musclecars. Currently building a squarebody chevy truck.
