Cafe seat

#1

Post by Gian0047 »

Hi All,
I just bought a 79 gl1000 that had been covered partially to a cafe. The prior owner was a large man and so took most of the padding off the original seat and recovered with brown leather. I will try to post a photo. I am looking for a nice seat, brown or black with good padding and some sort of back support
(Hump is enough). Ok to spend up to 300 but don’t need a Corbin, etc. used is fine or reliable but cheap model shipped from China or Thailand if already vetted by other members. Diamond or rolled pattern ideal
but plain is also Ok. Thanks!

Use that original seat pan and build up carpet padding until you have the shape that you want. Use 3M 80 spray adhesive to bond layers and then an electric carving knife to shape it. Then you can get an upholsterer to cover it or do it yourself. I had this one covered for me, but wish that I had done it myself, now.

Thanks. I like the look of them but good to know they aren’t really comfortable. I bought a used seat on eBay (Plush Aspencade model for same year) and will use that while I take a shot at redoing the original which the prior owner cut down flat as a board while doing the cafe renovation.

I know you say you aren't necessarily looking for a Corbin but I shopped around a bit and was lucky enough to land a used Gunfighter in excellent condition. It is firm but even my old bod has taken to this seat which I think is really comfortable as well as blending in with the lines on my 78.

Very nice. I will keep looking occasionally though I imagine finding a bargain gently used Corbin for a 40 year old bike is a bit like winning the lottery!

Ya you are probably right however I would have rather won the lottery. If I remember correctly I was shopping for other Gl1000 parts at the time, it was December and my Bro-in -law picked up the seat for me as it was listed for sale in Calgary Alberta (one of the coldest days they had that year -30 C). Paid $175 Cdn $ for it and it is in great shape. A lucky buy as it is really comfortable.
