Post by DannyBeenz »

So recently I decided to bob my 82 gl1100 the motor is strong and very well kept i just wanted to give some extra wow to my first bike im alittle concerned and confused about the new suspension for im going to be swapping out the old air ride suspension in the front and back with a more aggressive suspension to accommodate for the play in the back end any advice for me going into this before I make a ton of fatal mistakes

Progressive makes both springs for the front and shocks for the back.

A little more info (or maybe a pic or two) of what your target look is might make suggestions a bit easier. If you intend to keep the stock front forks but want to eliminate the air assist, then as Rat suggested above, replacing the stock springs with Progressive brand springs will allow you to do that. Replace the springs and block off the air inlets with the proper size bolts.
Several companies make replacement rear coil over shocks, but it will depend on if/ how you might modify the frame, etc.

I swapped out the air shocks on my 1100 for progressive coil overs. I despise air ride with a passion..

I would be very interested in knowing what shocks you used. I am in the process of doing the same thing to my 83 GL1100, but can't figure out exactly which progressive shocks to put on my bike. The best I can tell, I should be using 412-4222c progressive shocks, but when placing them in my cart, am told that I will need to buy ".25 in. Travel Limiters" which I can't seem to find anyone who currently sells them. Neither am I sure which size I need ( 11", 12", or 13"). I would be willing to just buy some and try them out if they weren't over $300 for a set. I would appreciate any insight anyone can give me into how to decide which progressive shocks to use.

I used these shocks.

I went with the standard rate springs as my bike is a standard with bags but no trunk and I ride solo.
They don't show the standard but say to call customer service regarding them.

Thank you so much. I don't know much about the suspension so I was having a hard time making a decision.

You don’t need the travel limiter. I got them and didn’t use them
