Trashbagger 2.0

#1

Post by DaveySprocket »

I’ll be building a second Trashbagger with my son who is a Freshman in a motorcycle and Powersports mechanic program.
Here is the OG Trashbagger I built in 2015 (I think, time is wacky)

Here are some of the essential details.
-Remove entire wire harness and make a simplified new harness
-probably going to be a kick only bike
-remove stock gas tank
- Cut top frame cradle off and install single backbone to utilize H-D Superglide gas tank
- install solo Police style seat
-install crusty old Bates saddlebags
- Rebuild engine from donor bike and install into chopped frame
-rebuild all brakes replace front master cylinder with one from a CBR600, drill holes in all the brake discs
-Probably lower the bike 1” front and rear

That should be the bones of it.
If anyone needs any stock parts I have loads of take of parts, exhaust, hbar switches, body panels, all the gizmos under the center console, battery trays, wheels, forks etc.

Should I be worried about this wear on the center cam journal?

Started to get into the meat of the motor from the donor bike. What we found was two snapped belts and 3 out of 4 bent valves! WTF would cause that??!!
So making a good set of heads out of the four I have. 4 new intake valves and the 4 best, straight exhaust valves I have. One head down one to go.
Any suggestions on where to pickup an engine seal kit? I have a gasket kit from Athens but no seals.

these are interference engines..when the timing belt breaks the valves stay where they are..which usually means meeting a piston face to face.
you are fortunate there wasn't more carnage.

On to the chopping. My son and I cut off the top frame cradle to allow for a single backbone tube. 1 1/8” .109” steel tube.
Cut off several unnecessary tabs. Once the backbone and cross brace are welded in place we will remove the engine and detab and grind smooth the rest of the frame.

Frame is off, engine is out. Engine is for sale. It needs pistons and bore/hone. It was seized but I freed it up. I now have a donor motor in better condition. I’m not looking for much money but would like to help others here keep their old wings going down the road. I’ll post an ad in the classifieds.

Progress and mock up
I think this seat is too small. Probably going to use an H-D “pogo stick seat”
I kinda dig the look of these homemade rabbit bars but not sure how they will feel going down the road.
Next on the list is to get the motor back in. 💪🏼

Moving right along!
I had some 'buck horn' bars on my old Yamaha and hated them. I could find no position that didn't cause my wrists and forearms to cramp up after thirty miles or so. YMMV. The nacelle is cool, depending on the headlight bucket you choose. It would be best with no gauges, IMhO.
