78 GL1000 resto-mod

#1

Post by bluefisher »

It's gonna take me awhile with posting here...I'm building my 78 GL1000 I have had for years and thought it was time to upgrade my Sunday morning ride. So I started this awhile ago but had to move years of stuff out of the old house, gut the new house and finally I'm in bliss...so far, powder coated frame, costume triple tree which caused a lot of pain but finally figured it out. 2010 Kawasaki 1400 front end. Lots of goodies. I just wanted a comfortable somewhat slick ride...I mean, who doesn't want that? I'll be fitting Randakks dual webber set up.One of the challenging things was fitting an Abe star rear wheel. Those bushings...well Mr Honda doesn't have a part # for those so I had to dig them out of a comstar. Anyway this is an updated pic...

Not yet, I just contacted them to see what that will run, the seat is virtually perfect but I think I want a dark brown to match stock panels. If it's crazy money I won't do it. Maybe find a local guy.

It's not cheap in the least, i called them to get a quote to do it for mine w/ faded red flames. it's cheaper to find a local upholsterer, IMO...

The rear disc is stock, It looks so big because the Abe rim is 16". Finding matching tires wasn't easy as the front is a 17".
I just had the rear fender fabricated so I've been messing about fitting it. I'll post the lens I found for the back. I'm really close to finishing this. I'll be fitting the speedo in the fuel gauge hole on the pod, fit the front fender, brake lines, Dyna ignition and then the dreaded carb set up. That is going to be really challenging....I'll be digging into the info here for that job. I've seen a few guys here use that set up. My friend Tom (he's on this site somewhere) PC'd the frame, engine covers, rims, brakes and all sorts of little bits... he'll be doing the fenders the same as the covers. Stay tuned and thanks for the comments!

I have been watching this build progress from the very beginning and it's been really cool to see it take shape. Philip has put a lot of time into the planning of this bike and has had his share of challenges. I've been fortunate to help with some of the work too. This is going to be a seriously nice bike when it's all done with lots of custom and trick parts.

Thanks to this forum, a great friendship has resulted. We get together often with the wives and always have a blast.
