So now that I have just about finished my 1975 Goldwing rebuild to stock I have decided to take the two parts bikes I bought and build another naked Wing. The 75 being my first trip to the Wing World I was not aware how few parts would interchange from the 80 and 83. I was able to use the front calipers, tach cable, and brake hoses from the 80 so all was not lost.

Here is a pic of the 80 when I brought it home. It did run but has major carb problems and a hacked up exhaust along with no rear brake and a leaking fuel pump. And here is a pic of the 83. It sat out in the weather too long and the carbs are hopelessly frozen up. The engine does turn over but some valves are stuck open from rust in a couple of cylinders. One good thing about it is I got a title with it. So the plan is to build a bike using the 83 frame and title and just about everything else from the 80. It will be a budget build with mostly rattle can paint and some home made parts.

So far I have built an intake manfold and mounted a Holley 7200 carb to the 80 to make sure it runs good enough to use the 80 engine before pulling it out of the frame. It idles smooth now and revs ok so mission accomplished there.

I have stripped the 83 frame, cleaned it and applied a coat of good old Rustoleum satin black paint. I also have rebuilt the fuel pump from the 80 donor motor with a diaphram I purchased from http://www.marxparts.com/
Here is a pic of how the PO solved the leaky fuel pump. Luckily no gas had gotten into the crankcase. I don't think he ran it long like this. Next will be stripping the 80 and cleaning up the engine and painting/polishing everything for installing into the 83 frame.

Spent a couple hours today stripping the ‘80 down to the bare bones. Any idea why there was an exhaust leak?

Those bikes haven’t had this much love in a couple of decades.

Just an FYI, there are a few differences between the '81 and '83. The 81 has the neutral switch on the right side of the engine, and the 83 has a more complicated switch behind the transmission cover. The 83 also has self- cancelling directionals, so the wiring harness is different. The 83 came stock with improved spark ignitors as well. They are a plug and play swap.

While I had the ‘83 frame upside down prepping for paint I found some cancerous holes in the removable frame section and the cross brace with the center stand. The ‘80 frame is rust free and Since I do not have a title to the 80 frame I decided to sacrifice to to properly repair the ‘83 frame. I cut out the rusted cross brace leaving about half of the factory weld to have some meat to weld the replacement part to. I then cut way more from the ‘80 frame than I needed then trimmed to fit. After welding and painting it’s now good as new.

It’s a roller with a clean fuel tank!

Today I took off the front cover and pulled out the bad water pump and did some polishing on the valve covers and cleaned up the engine and put a coat of paint on it. The timing belt covers were in pretty poor shape so instead of spending countless hours sanding and polishing them I decided to hit them with 320 sand paper and put a coat of black paint on them. All of the factory insulation had leaked out of the ignition modules so I filled them with some clear epoxy I went in the house and got on the computer and ordered a new water pump, gaskets, clutch arm seal and a new Dunlop tire for the front.

I ran across a deal I couldn’t pass up on CL even though it involved a 400 mile round trip. A guy had a shelter, side covers and fenders with new paint for $100. Since I was missing side covers anyway it was a sweeter deal. The new water pump and gaskets have already arrived from Saber so I’ll be installing them today.

When installing the front wheel and tire to make the bike a roller I went by the arrow on the tire then noticed the speedo drive was on the wrong side. A PO had put the tire on backwards! My new tire will be here today to that will be resolved soon. Another item to add to the growing list of previous screwups which include wood peg in fuel pump weep hole and sheet metal screw with silicone in water pump weep hole. Its amazing this bike was still running when I bought it. The PO had also been riding it with no rear brake.

I installed the front brake calipers. Master cylinder and hoses today. Filled and bled the system. I have brakes on both ends now. As soon as I get one more gasket I’ll get the motor buttoned up. I have it where it will stop now I need to make it go. Also installed the wiring harness coils regulator ignition modules and overflow tank.

I have the motor all cleaned up and painted just waiting on a new front trans cover gasket to replace the one I screwed up. Heres what happens when the gasket drops down while installing the cover
The sharp hollow dowel punches a nice oblong hole right where the o-ring is. no chance for a seal.

Finally got the new front tranny cover gasket in yesterday and buttoned the engine up. Today I spent a few hours putting the 80 engine in the 83 frame. Installed the engine, hooked up cables and wires, installed the radiator and plumbed the fuel lines to the Holley carb.
