GL1100 Sport Tour improvements

#1

Post by DUGG »

After finishing the frame repairs viewtopic.php?f=1&t=76166 it was time to move on to some improvements. Not that fixing a rusted frame isn’t an improvement.
Seeing how the rear wheel was off I started with painting the final drive and rear rotor gold to match the front rotors.

Next was the dual piston front calipers I’ve had kicking around for a few years. Whatever paint Honda uses is some tough stuff. After using paint stripper and bead blasting they where down to bare metal. A fresh coat of red paint and new pistons, seals and pads they where installed. Along with the braided lines and 14mm master stopping power should be way better than stock.

Thanks. I’ve been meaning to start this post for awhile but getting the work done seems more of a priority than posting about it. But I have been taking pictures alone the way.

Thanks for the compliments.
Next up was the mount for the Vetter fairing. I like the look of the fairing and the ease of the taking the fairing off. It’s a five minute job tops.
What I hate about it is how added on it looks due to hose clamps that hold the mount to the frame

There are two threaded mounting holes conveniently located on either side of the frame that Vetter could of used. Not sure what there are for? Stock fairing?
Anyway after three attempts at making a bracket to tie the the frame I finally had them done.

I was tempted to redo the upper part of the mount too but they are hidden and I want to finish up and get riding. Maybe I will revisit it this winter, or not.

Those holes are for the horn mounts on a standard. One horn each side.

That’s what I thought, but you know what can happen when you assume.

Moving on the the next project was the Harley mufflers. I’ve had these kicking around for a few years now.
I dug through my selection of metal and found some 1/4x1 aluminum flat bar that was suited for building mount brackets

My plans is to take it to an exhaust shop to get the pipes made so I fabricated a jig to hold the mufflers in the correct position. After all I don’t want them misaligned.

Cutting the mufflers off the headers was tougher than I thought it would be. At first I went for the reciprociting saw and it barely put a scratch in it. So next was the friction saw. Three cutoff wheels later and the headers where free from the old mufflers.
I got the mufflers mocked up and ready for the exhaust shop.

are you going to add the u shaped pipe to the saddle bag mounts that connects them together? It would make it more stable, especially with the added weight of the mufflers.

I think it will be good without, time will tell I suppose. The saddle bags will add additional structure and support. Each muffler weighs 7 pounds. The saddle bags carry far more weight than that.
