dual oil pressure gauges

Post by kotkinjs1 »

Hi again,

So in trying to restore some of the stock-ness back to this naked '82 GL1100, I found an original instrument/light cluster unit and hooked it up and wired it in. It all works except the oil light and maybe the engine temp dial (not sure yet because I haven't had it out yet but when I turn the bike on the needle doesn't move at all). But anyway back to the oil light - it doesn't work because the PO installed a little Accel oil pressure gauge out of the engine where the little screw in sending unit used to be. I've seen in another post here after research that someone engineered a way to have both, the little gauge and a working connection to the dummy light via a t-connector coming out of the engine which the sending unit screws into.

I'd like to have both if possible too but I can't find any more info on what type of connection to look for. I like the dummy light because it's an immediate visible warning vs having to randomly look all the way down to see what the running pressure is....but it's also nice I guess to know what the actual pressure is so you can see problems starting before they become a real problem.

So has anyone seen a double output t-connector type of setup like this and can provide some parts details? Thanks!

I think most NAPA stores should have what you need. Really, the gauge is only useful as a shop diagnostic - better off to replace it with the switch. And, the temperature won't register until the engine warems up. A FSM should have resistance specs for the sensor and a procedure to test. The 1000s (and I suspect the 1100s the same) use a bimetalic gauge that is very slow to respond, so be aware of that.
