77 gl1000 color scheme

#1

Post by Apinkston »

I have a 1977 gl1000 that is in dire need of a whole new color scheme. I want to go with a cafe racer look but I’m not chopping my frame. My first idea was to go with a black with gold accent scheme but I’m having a hard time finding much in gold chrome. I want the engine mostly matte black with gold chrome accents on the valve covers, cooling pipes, fuel system, and intake manifolds. The rear shocks I wanted gold springs with black pistons, and on the front shocks I wanted black on the lower portion connecting to the wheel, and gold on the upper portion. For the handlebar controls I wanted black with gold buttons and letters. Black fenders and crash bars, then black with gold pinstripes on the plastics. I can’t find gold accessories like foot pegs or highway pegs, controls, handles, or anything like that so it’s looking like I have to either paint them or take them to a paint shop. Should I put this effort in after buying these new items or should I try and change the color scheme to something easier to get parts in color
PS. Can I powder coat the engine while it’s assembled or do I have to disassemble it to powder coat it

I have used the DupliColor engine paints (lots of silvers and blacks available) for the engine block and they are good for 500F so no issue there. Powder coating would be expensive vs DupliColor and it isn't chemical resistant IMO. I have always painted the entire engine block as a unit with the appropriate sections masked carefully first.

With any paint job its all about the prep and cleaning for good results. I now shoot all my own paints from a frame to the engine to all the covers and shelters etc. I use a small gravity feed paint gun and a compressor with automotive body shop paints for the frame and body covers. It is much more cost effective, yet there is a learning curve.

You can get many rattle can paints now with a hardener capsule built into the bottom of the can in a 2K style of either paint or clearcoat. These are like a professional finish and are gas resistant on gas tanks etc.
The DupliColor I noted above is chemical resistant once cured with heat and is designed for automotive motors originally, yet work very well on bike engines. I have probably done more than a dozen engines over the years with this paint process.

Regarding the gold stuff it is not possibly to get a real shiny gold like finish from a paint that I have seen over my time. Powder coat I don't know, yet unlikely to get that real gold look finish.

DupliColor just released a proper engine primer paint for these engine base coats. I was using a DupliColor self etching primer previously that worked well, yet wasn't listed as high temperature.

Here is the new primer paint and code.

That helps a lot. Definitely will be saving money this way. I don’t mind getting an air compressor and a paint gun especially since my last bout with rattle cans didn’t end too well. I guess I’ll have to call around to some paint shops and see if they can make a gold paint that’ll come out that shiny. I can try rattles and practice on the frame since that’ll mostly be covered up. Really appreciate it thanks

Must be completely disassembled. The pieces have to be sand blasted prior to coating. I've had KZ engine cases powder coated clear. The sand gets everywhere. You have to spend a lot of time cleaning. Then even more time cleaning some more. I have the powder coater blast the cases. Then bring them home and clean. Then using the tape he supplied I mask it all off. Then take them back to be coated. Very time consuming. Looks when done though.

Just a suggestion that I would consider using rattle cans and working on your technique before investing in a compressor and paint gun. You don’t need a huge compressor; my current one is a wheeled portable 30 gallon unit in the $600 range in Canada. The gun is a small cheaper unit in the $70 range to give you examples.

All depends on your budget and future use of the tools, to see if it is cost effective. I restore 2-3 bikes a year, so it made financial sense to do it and also learn about doing these things myself vs paying for outside work/services.

There are a number of youtube videos that demonstrate how to paint gold over chrome, might be of interest to you. Just do a search for gold chrome or painting gold.

You can get things literally gold plated. I’m sure expensive though.
You can also achieve a professional paint job using rattle cans when using Duplicolor and the 2K clear coat. I own a paint gun and compressor and chose the rattle can route.

Hi FlyingJ. I am about to repaint my engine on my 76 LTD. How do you typically prep the engine before priming? Do you need to sand before priming? Do you heat the engine or the paint before applying?
How do you remove the paint from all the bolts after painting. Most of the bolts on the LTD are chrome.

Thank you

Alarmdoc.

I have painted a few. I used a strong de-greaser and a stiff brush followed by power washing. Worked well for me.

I'm in the middle of powder coating chrome parts off my roadstar. I went with black chrome.
I tried the "shadow" kit from duplicolour and it's garbage. It's a translucent black and clear and it doesn't adhere to the chrome at all.
If you wanted to go the powder coat route on your chrome parts eastwood has a translucent yellow metallic yellow that is more gold then yellow. Your parts need to be polished very well to really get the best look.
This is the dash off my roadstar beside the air breather. This was 1 coat of powder. I'm going to do a second coat to darken it up a bit more.

Image

unfortunately it will be difficult to find a paint that matches the powder coating for your non chrome parts.
I've been debating on doing the valve covers, belt covers and possibly the rims on my 76 wing in copper. I have the body panels already painted brandy wine..I think the copper accents will look good with it.
