I also but a Stebil Nautilus in that same place on the lift bracket - but no shield. It died after 3 years. Too much grit flying around down there. I’m curious how well the shield protects it. I’ve got two electric horns down there now.

Not being argumentative about the fuel shut off but my readings have indicated that many owners install a DanMarc electric fuel shut off to prevent Hydrolock. I put one of those fuel shutoffs on my Valk and I now know that unless the key is turned on then there is no fuel filling my cylinders. No "old timers" memory needed to make sure it is left in the off position.

I have read over on the VRCC site where many have done just that. I don't think the Danmarc even existed when I had my Valk. Seems to be the ticket and failproof.

I thought this might be a good idea with my failing memory. I got no-where tryng to find Dan-Marc. Guess they are not arround anymore. Since I have an electric fuel pump it's probably a 'belts & braces' unnecessary item.
But out of interest I had a look to see what in-line electric shut-offs were out there. Not too many! Or at least, not too many of a size to fit a motorcycle. these two were the best I could come up with (UK eBay but I'm sure similar on the US version)

Interesting.
Googling Dan-Marc didn't show anything at all when I tried.
The Valkyrie link doesn't work.
The last one is quite neat but no mounting bracket. Obviously intended for metal pipework. You would have to source 6mm brass tails and make some kind of band typw mounting.

I’ve read quite a bit on the “crappy Valk petcock leading to the dreaded hydro-lock” over the years, including a treatise of all the ways a hydro-lock can happen despite your best solutions and vigilant maintenance. I think I have a pdf somewhere of extensive instructions on how to install a Dan-Mar and Pingle, and fully intended to install them. But I’ve also read where many owners never experienced any such issues after many years and miles. I’ve hydro-locked a 4 cylinder wing twice without any consequence other than a lesson in fluid dynamics. Evidently, the Valk starter is so strong, it will snap teeth off anything standing in it’s way, and that’s a pretty big consequence.

In the end, I just ride it the way it came. I don’t even shut off the petcock - call me crazy.

I’m with Steve, but confident - stayed oem. I’m religious about petcock on/off though. Replaced my oem petcock with a new oem at the 95-100k mile mark when I did other major maintenance. My Wolo horn is bolted to the front lower timing cover area, gets lots of road spray and typically fails in its second or third season. I just buy another, $40 at any parts store and rock on LOUDLY.

Never had a petcock problem, but the old screen was iffy at removal. Didn’t break or crack but it gave me pause twisting and pulling it out. I was happy to install the new one with its new o-ring seals.

My Valkyrie IS has 117k? miles and is parked in the back garage, needing a front tire and registration/insurance. FOR SALE at a “beater” price if anybody wants a project. Fishtailed and flipped in 2014 and still scratched up, runs strong. Rode it to Inzane in Billings, MT June of 2022.

Bought an 08 GL1800 in July 22 and that’s all she wrote!

That’s funny, I bought a Valkyrie interstate the full dressed model for $4000 took a lot of the goodies off and sold them on eBay for $2000 so I got my bike for really $2000 , it had 5000 miles on it and now has 90,000 miles no break downs just oil filter brakes and tires, never really enjoyed riding as much since I bought that Valkyrie, oh yeah I’m a retired Harley mechanic too, ha ha

“Evidently, the Valk starter is so strong, it will snap teeth off anything standing in its way, and that’s a pretty big consequence.”

Conjecture on my part : When I bent a rod on my 1200, I think it is not just starter that does the damage. If one intake valve is closed, and it pools gas above the intake valve, (wouldn’t take much) another of the three cylinders could fire. So it could be the starter and one explosion driving the offending cylinder whose intake valve opened, dumped in liquid gas, then closed and right into the hydrolock. I’m not familiar enough with the Valk’s firing order and rotation, but I’m pretty sure the same could happen. I believe that sparks are 60 degrees apart on the Valk, so perhaps a greater chance of a firing cylinder ahead of the hydrolock.

I’ve done it several times with no consequences but the one time I bent a rod, I did notice a very loud crack sound.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Let me be among the first to congratulate you for "Bike of the January." I owned a Valk for a bit but could never quite get used to the seating position, yours is certainly beautiful. Talk about murals and paint, mine came with green and purple, professionally applied but overwhelmingly awful!
Bikes at present:

83 XL 600r with a 2004 XR650L engine
And a slightly worse for the wear BMW GS adventure bike awaiting repair
83 GL in process :IDTS:
