Now that my former plans have changed, to not attending the CB900 Club NE Spring Ride on the first weekend in June, I just might trike up to the NGW Canadian Run scouting ride, to see some of y'all sooner than the actual September event. tumb2

(Then, I won't feel so sad about missing out on the CVMG Paris Fairgrounds Rally, this year. :( )

Not a decision maker here but looks like a great start provided it has antique shops and such on the way lol.

Thousand Islands Moment – Fifteenth in a Series

If you travel around the Thousand Islands region one of the words that you will hear about the small towns and villages that line the shore is “quaint.”

You could substitute “stuck in the past” and “struggling” for that.

Industry has come and gone and like other areas of Canada and the US most of the large international industries have left the area.

There are historical industrial stories that made people rich, like Dr Williams Pink Pills for Pale People that made the Fulford fortune in Brockville and Fulford House today is a museum time capsule of that era.

Fine old homes dot the communities that were owned by early industrialists.

The largest carriage factory in the Dominion was located in Brockville and made an early venture into the automobile business. For ten years leading up to 1921 several different cars were produced in the works. There are two on display at the Brockville Museum.

There are still industries and the industrial base may actually be growing, but these are small industries for the most part.

P&G and a few others are still here, but not to the extend they used to be.

Up until the late 90s you could still graduate Grade 10 in Gananoque and get a factory job paying $40,000 a year.

Today, tourism is one of the prime industries. Waterfronts are one of the area communities’ prime assets.

One of the major industries that grew almost as a cottage industry is boat building. Because of the closeness of the water and the need to travel on the water, boat-building was handed down from father to son.

Early bateaux were crafted by home builders. Larger sailing versions also existed. War ships for the War of 1812 were built here.

Through the years some major boat builders have emerged in the Thousand Islands and on the Rideau and today there are many classic and antique boats. Clayton is home to the largest collection of fresh water boats in the world at the Antique Boat Museum. Kingston is the fresh water sailing capital of the world. And there are probably more tour boats in the Thousand Islands region than anywhere else in the world.

There was a time that almost everyone who lived here could build a useable and useful boat.

Names like Andress starting from William Francis Andress who arrived in the area in the 1800s, have created all sorts of craft. William passed his skills onto son Eddy who opened Andress Boat Works in 1920 and later generations of the Andress’s still operate the boat works in Rockport today.

Clifford Hunt opened a boat shop in Gananoque and built the early wooden tour boats for local boatlines - boats known by the names Linda and Ida such as Linda, Linda 1, Linda 11 etc.

Charlie Cliffe developed Cliffe Craft boats in Gananoque and anyone who has seen the wooden OPP boat that is used in displays across Ontario has seen one of his boats. He also built St. Lawrence Skiffs, the two ended skiffs that are built to be easy to row in the rough waters of the St. Lawrence.

Ted Larski teamed up with welder Rene Longtin and they built the aluminum triple decker tour boats used by the Gananoque Boat Lines and others. They also built other tour boats working in many different places and several other boats sailing and powering around the world.

Today Metal Craft Marine in Kingston builds high speed and working aluminum boats that are sold around the world.

Jamie Auld in Brockville builds powerful racing boats. He also competes in hydroplane races throughout Eastern Canada.

Between working boatyards and individuals that still maintain skills, you can still get any kind of boat built here that you want.

My apologies to our America friends for the lop-sided story. There was just as much boat building taking place on the US side but I am most familiar with the Canadian side.

This concludes the historical part of this series. There is much more to be learned online and of course by visiting.

For those who are coming to the islands as part of the bike run in the fall the next installment will be about the attractions that are within close reach of the Ivy Lea Campground. And for those on the tour there will be a package of information and some stops along the route to see some of these attractions – at least from the road!

Mark, I have always wanted to visit the boat museum. As far as Cliff's comments about the CB900 rally, all I can say is why be in-line when you can be opposed !

Mike,

The boat museum is worth a visit but you need a whole day just to see it all.

That's about a 30 minute ride from here.

There is a mini ,museum in Gan that is related - it's a quick visit.

Next time you are here, I'll take you there.
