Route 66 Ride
I've been itching to ride Route 66 and I'm in the planning stage. Is anyone else interested?
So many opportunities to tag along, even if its only selected portions of the road.
I haven't set a date but weather wise I read that summer (June, July, August) are the best months. Albeit a little warm (i.e. hot) going through the western states.

Re: Route 66 Ride
Not sure it is in the cards for 2017, but that is a great bucket list ride in the future. I suggest waiting until 2018.

I will definitely meet up with you in AZ and go as far as possible. Simply because we are in the club! 2017 spring/summer sounds like a plan.

Re: Route 66 Ride
Aw man! I'd normally be all over this - probably grabbing the crew in New Mexico or something and going to the coast. But, I have a planned Valkyrie gathering in Billings, Montana in June. If it's anywhere around then, I'd have to bow out...unless you guys would be stopping in Flagstaff or thereabouts. For sure, I could be up for a meet and greet. Flag is about 3 hours north from me.
Just a word: Anyone who's crossed the Mojave in Summer knows that preparation is the key. It's a big, hot desert. Plan for that.

Re: Route 66 Ride
Thanks guys! Will keep everyone informed. So far, planning with a friend from Canada, is around end of May to mid-June. It really depends on my son's college graduation date. As of now, it hasn't been set. But plan on starting at/near Baxter Springs, Kansas. Start in Oklahoma and head west.

Re: Route 66 Ride
VERY hot during those months once you get to OK! Some of the best old 66 is in eastern Oklahoma and it runs about 3 miles from our house. Bar-b- que maybe? It was on 66 I had my little run-in with the suv on memorial day weekend

Re: Route 66 Ride
I have not ridden much more than 100 miles of 66 but it runs with in 10 miles of home. I have not researched any current maps. Does anyone know where to get a good map of the exsisting rout or at least the midwest. . I would like to join in for a days ride beginning from somewhere south west of Chicago.

Re: Route 66 Ride
Well, I gotta tell you, prepare yourself for a nostalgic ride, but it'll definitely be depressing in places. In some areas, the decay and ghosts of motels and diners past are startling. Skeletons, graffiti. Sad, really. Grants, New Mexico comes to mind as one of the more striking examples of what has been lost.

Re: Route 66 Ride
One of the little known treasures of Route 66 are the neon signs that have been rescued or saved. The U.S. government passed a bill to help have some these restored and put back on display. The bill created a very small budget to help with the restoration. There are hundreds of small details and stories for the interested person. Books and Route 66 historians will pleasantly surprise you. I've had the opportunity to attend guided tours of about 200 miles of Route 66 in the St Louis area and it is fascinating.

Re: Route 66 Ride
been a lot of times on I40 since 1979 and watched all those little towns decay. Sadly out in NM and AZ the only remnants of 66 is turning off the interstate to drive through those little towns. I think there is still a segment that heads up towards Santa Fedesertrefugee wrote:Well, I gotta tell you, prepare yourself for a nostalgic ride, but it'll definitely be depressing in places.
