I have some really bad news, folks.
Plans are afoot to enable me to attend this event. Been thinking about it for a while back.
I do have some unfinished business I have to attend to since my last visit to the US did not work out as planned.

Loose plan is as follows:
Some time ago I bought a 1200 Standard from a member on here. I was trying get to travel to the States to collect it last summer, but work got in the way.
So I went over for Christmas last, one of the jobs I had to do was collect the bike and ship it back here.
That didn't work out as I got hospitalised in Savannah GA on January 1st and had to cut the trip short.
Now this year, my plan is to fly to Philadelphia, Get Wife and Daughter installed in a hotel in New Jersey, I will get a flight then close to where the bike is.collect the bike, somehow get insurance and stuff to make it road legal, and of course do whatever servicing is needed, new rubber, T belts, Battery and whatever.
Plan then is to ride to Marlinton and spend the few days there.
Afterwards then ride the bike to New Jersey and drop it off at the shipping depot.

That would be awesome. I'm sure if you need some help with logistics members would be more than happy to help out. Where is the bike located?

I have some stuff to sort to get the bike roadworthy.
It needs tires and a battery for sure. I will have to check about t belts. Of course oil and filter.

My big issue would be how to make the bike legal to ride, not sure how to do that. Anybody any ideas?

No idea about the state laws where you will be picking up the bike. In my area, you can get 30 day temp tags with the proper paperwork, insurance and inspection. Might work.

The bike is located in Bedford, VA. It is only 125 miles from Marlinton.
Looks like the route crosses some high ground.

You'll be dealing with Virginia DMV then, here's their website. https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/#/. Since you have a situation that isn't normal and you're not a resident of the state it would be best to call them. At the top of the page is a contacts link. Also you can find the nearest DMV location in Bedford as well. I don't know about insurance. I know that folks that have come over in the past and bought a new bike used the dealers address to title and register the bike and get insurance. Since your dealing with a private party I'm not sure what address you would use. Maybe the hotel you'll be staying in? You can sign up for insurance online you might try Progressive, it is a motorcycle friendly insurer and with a local address you might be able to get it insured. Otherwise talking to a local agent might be best.

Bedford is "only" about 60 miles from me. If you drive there on Hwy 460 (from Richmond) it is a gentle incline to get to Bedford and the Roanoke valley. The same following 460 up to just north of Roanoke. From there I would go up I81 to I64. I have not been on 220 to Clifton Gorge, but it looks decent and scenic as it is a secondary highway, and I bet lots of ups and downs and curves.

The mountains diagonal from the SW to the NE... so heading in that direction mostly is along valleys. Heading SE to NW is up and down and ridge after ridge.

Just to keep things up to speed. Liam's 1200 has been in Norfolk for a couple weeks now. After a pretty thorough inspection we have a good days work to get it ready

Stator R & R, Forks to rebuild, tires to change, wheel bearings, Battery, hydraulics to flush etc etc etc. Parts have been steadily arriving and so far things are on schedule.

I will do some of the piddling stuff before he arrives. He will be here for 5 or 6 days before we head out and we will do the bulk of it then. Looking forward to it, should be a fun time!!

Seems like I been down this road before :-? :-? :-?
