100 hours
Very very interesting. Grandson Graduates High School 2 June in Coquille Or. Was planning to fly out but I think maybe the new bike will need to stretch it's legs. Colorado Utah Nevada and New Mexico will complete all 50 States for me. Looks like a worthy adventure. Unfortunately the Better Half does not get enough vacation time for a run like this so she would still fly and I would do a solo.

Re: 100 hours
Come back on the northern route, it will be real hot along I-40 by early June and stay that way all summer. I look at that route and how you usually burn up the Interstates and almost cry. There are so many wonderful places to see and explore along both those routes.

Re: 100 hours
Something you might consider if your serious about making long trips on the 1800 is to buy a used rear wheel for the bike and put a new tire on it. Before your trip put the new tire and wheel on the bike and when you return put the old one back on and wear out the tire completely. This can save you some money in the long run as the rear on an 1800 is only good for around 11-12k miles depending on how you ride. If you have 1500 to 2k miles left on a rear and your contemplating a 3k mile trip you'll need to replace the tire before you leave and throw away the old one. That's throwing away around 15% of the use of the tire. With decent rear tires in the $200-$250 range you'll be tossing a good portion of your investment away. With a little judicious shopping you should be able to get one for around $50.

Re: 100 hours
Was thinking about the rear tire already. That is a great idea.
I had already locked down the idea of 40 going west (late May) and then the mountains coming east (early June). I can only afford a day or 2 of screwing off and i think that will be in Colorado. Really want an easy day maybe 2 there crossing over the divide and then in the Pike's peak area. Better Half spent a couple years in there before we met and I want to see some of it.
Some of the roads i want to run are closed for the Winter so Google maps won't let me do what i want right now!! Want to run 82 from Glenwood Springs through Aspen to 24 to Pikes Peak.

Re: 100 hours
So this is just a WAG but something to deviate from. I put 3 extra days in for the run west to compensate for weather, exhaustion, mechanical issues, sight seeing etc etc. The run East will be driven by my urge to be home but I do want to go up Pikes Peak if the weather allows and say hello to a old friend that passed away there in 2015 and do some sight seeing around the divide area.

Re: 100 hours
You need to build in a down day 6 days of 500+ mile days will wear you slam out. Or build in another travel day both ways and even up the daily mileage.

Re: 100 hours
Rear tire? Come to the Dark Side. We have cookies. 18000 miles instead of 8000. $140 instead of $200. Have them mounted at Walmart. You will eventually notice ~50% of the GL1800s you see have run-flat car tires.I've put around 70k miles on them myself. Takes 50-100 miles to forget that they are on there. Then, you'll go around a curve with gravel in it and pucker up for the slide that doesn't happen. And you'll know.

Re: 100 hours
Yea there is going to be some fudge in there. This schedule allows 3 extra days before Rusty would arrive out there so if there are no other delays I can split things up easily enough. I just wanted to get it roughed out for now.
First I want to get everything on the bike 100% and then start building my daily miles. Maybe a quick blast to Buffalo and back in April just to see how I will hold up. Dramatically different seating position and after the 200 miles yesterday my back was talking, not loud but it was there. Hopefully it is just a muscle issue and I can work through it with more seat time. I don't know how you big guys sit on these things. Feels cramped to me!!

Re: 100 hours
I found that back and neck pain is often relieved with handlebar pullbacks. I had a set on my 1800 and Terrie's trike has them too. Try adjusting the backrest to put you further forward as well. If you're leaning forward to reach the bars that will cause back pain as well as neck and shoulder pain.

Re: 100 hours
This was lower back, almost the top of the hips. I had already lowered the back rest to it's lowest position. The guy I got it from was probably 6' 4" or better and the back rest felt like it was hitting the bottom of my shoulder blades
The handlebars feel very good where they are. Shoulders and upper back were very comfortable. He did mention something about having some adjusters in there but I did not understand what he was describing.
After 4 hours in the saddle it was not bad but it was there so something to pay attention to. Maybe as simple as using one of the Airhawks to raise me up a bit. Just need to experiment I hope

Re: 100 hours
On our first long distance MC trip Terrie only had a week and I had two. We both flew into Missoula, MT where the bikes had been trailered and then we rode through Glacier and up through the Canadian Rockies. After Terrie's week was up I took Terry to the Calgary airport where she flew back to Raleigh and I continued on with the rest of the group that we were riding with. My point is if Rusty has a little time she can fly into whatever airport she needs to and then you both could ride up either the Oregon and Washington coast and she could leave from Seattle or south along the California coast to San Francisco where she could fly home. There are some lovely places to see either direction. If your interested I can give you some ideas how we made it our trip work.
