oil filter adapter

for those of you that have M.B.S. (multiple bike syndrome) and have the "silver wing" models.
as our sponsors also have supplies for those bikes and they are popular with the "wing" crowd.

oil filter adapter

#1

Post by donlaubach »

I saw somewhere on this forum that someone was selling adapters for screw on filter conversion. I can't find it again and also what are peoples opinions about doing it. Also, what oil is recommended for the twisted Vs. Alot of folks on the gl1000 sites swear by Rotela or other diesel oils. Thoughts???

Randakk, on of our sponsors sells the filter adapters. Oil is a personal choice. Some like Rotella, and some like motorcycle specific oil

No offense to Randakk & Bob, but that adapter is expensive and not the best option for the Twisted Twins.

This one is much less expensive and doesn't space the filter out from the front of the engine

Re oil: There are any number of threads that will give you all sorts of information but it boils down to this:
1) Motorcycle specific oils are not always better for your engine than oil marketed for cars
http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/oiltest1.htm

2) Since that article was written they have increased the anti-slip additives in car oils to the point that any oil rated higher than SAE SJ can cause a wet clutch to slip. JASO MA is a specification for diesel engines that does not have those additives so it is safe for wet clutches. Shell Rotella T is a JASO MA oil that is commonly available in Canada & the US, often for less than any brand name car oil so it has become the oil of choice for many motorcyclists, myself included.

I'd never use one. Far more susceptible to being punctured than the original design.

I have heard that concern a couple hundred times over the years but yet to talk to anyone that has actually seen it or had it happen to them. I know I have accumulated well over 100,000 miles since converting my 78 Wing and never had an issue.

I have one on three different bikes, and have never had a problem, or have I ever heard of anyone having one punctured. The filters are made of pretty tough stuff. And it makes changing the oil a much easier task. Well worth it. I also believe the spin on filters offer much better filtration then the stock ones

Well, I ordered one and will be converting. I have never heard of a fram or other name brand filter disintegrating but I have heard issues with Emgo filters coming apart so I am more than willing to take the chance of some stray rock puncturing the spin on. Same thing could happen on a car but have never heard of it.

Check out what was inside the Fram compared to the others.

A lot of good information. Filters are a very important part of the overall oiling system. No place to go cheap

Are these still available? I couldn't really tell from the link on that page other than it would take my money ;-)

Yes but note that while Murray's adapter is probably the best option for using spin on filters on CX/GL500/650 bikes it might not be the best choice for a GoldWing. There are lots of spin on filters that are the correct diameter to match the mating surface on the twins but the original filter, cover and mating surface on a GoldWing are larger so you may not find a filter that will work.

One of my favorite mods. A few years back, the machinist who makes these was selling them himself - and I bought mine directly from him. As I recall, I believe he is Canadian. Near as I can tell, they're only available through Randakks now. Marked up somewhat, but well worth the cost.

Backyardbob (Bob Hagerman) is the machinist that makes them. Sometimes you see them on Fleabay under his seller's name of huntech2006. Long time GL1000 rider, member here and all around great guy ;) ;) ;)
