Replaced Mech. Seal with engine in

for those of you that have M.B.S. (multiple bike syndrome) and have the "silver wing" models.
as our sponsors also have supplies for those bikes and they are popular with the "wing" crowd.

Replaced Mech. Seal with engine in

#1

Post by Bear »

Replaced the Mechanical Seal in the water pump without pulling the engine a couple days ago.
Was a little concerned about this but turned out great and was very easy to do. Details about
this procedure can be found on the CX forum or just google it.
Just thought to encourage you to try this if you have a weeping water pump

See if this works. The "scary" part was to heat up the brand new $50 seal to take it apart without ruining it
but turned out easy, doesn't take much heat at all to break the glue loose.

Very cool post thanks. I just picked up an 82 last Saturday and the seal is good for now but the bike has sat for a long time outside and I wonder how long this will last once it gets driven I read a lot about this seal. Is it one of those things one should have on the shelf?

I had two of them which I rode with a leaking seal for a while, just got tired of it. The seals are readily available, some cheaper
Yamaha seal supposedly also will work for this method.

Nobody buys the seal from Honda these days. Yamaha 11H-12438-10-00 is the exact same item for about half the price. Folks in Australia have an even cheaper option in a seal for a Davey agricultural pump but when you add the cost of shipping one to North America you might as well buy the Yamaha one (not to mention how long you would have to wait for it to come half way around the world).

BTW: Sometimes you get lucky (or get to feel stupid) and the leak isn't the seal. Eccles started peeing out of the weep hole a few weeks ago. When I pulled out the water pipe the impeller nut fell out. I was sure I used threadlocker and a torque wrench when I put it together last year  But at least I didn't need to replace the seal
