Trident Police Trike

for those of you that have M.B.S. (multiple bike syndrome) and have the "silver wing" models.
as our sponsors also have supplies for those bikes and they are popular with the "wing" crowd.

Trident Police Trike

#1

Post by scootsx2 »

My latest acquisition which will be a project for next fall/winter. The trike is complete except for the front brake master cylinder. This is a true "it ran when it was parked" machine. I know the previous owner and it indeed was a runner when parked 5 - 6 years ago. It's going to take some work:
- Complete fuel system cleaning including carb rebuild
- Brake overhaul
- New tires all around
- Thorough cleanup of the electrical system
- Probably fork seals and front wheel bearings
- Perform the "triple bypass" (timing chain & tensioner, water pump & seals) inspection and address any issues found
- Cosmetics as needed

That is quite unique! Do you have a photo from the rear? How narrow is it wheel to wheel, looks much less than a lot of modern trikes. Look forward to following this project.

I'll post additional photos after I haul it home next weekend. It measures about 4' 8" wide in the rear. Overall length is just under 7-ft.

Heed my advice: Don't do the "triple bypass".

You live in a place where they have real store-the-bike-until-the-world-stops-being-white winters. Even if you don't think you will want to now, if you have something that doesn't fall over you will eventually decide that you have been out of the saddle long enough and take it out in the cold part of the year. The starter clutches in these bikes are notorious for not grabbing when it is cold out unless they are in perfect condition. To service the starter clutch you have to drop the engine, remove the rear cover (& everything that goes with that) and remove the flywheel. During the "triple" you have to do all of that stuff anyway so do yourself a huge favour and invest the few $ that the starter clutch springs, caps & rollers cost to turn it into the "quad bypass". It will save you a lot of frustration later on.

Duly noted and it has been added to the to-do list.

Here are a couple of photos after I got it home and cleaned off the mold and mildew.

never heard of it, where was it used? who did the conversion? info on the fairing?

i'm thinking it might bolt up to 1100 brackets/mounting (CX650 i think & gl1100 both used tHe same hondaline fairing) hardware like vetter mounts up to all model brackets?

Information I had discovered for my Trident trike indicates it has a Jeep rear end, from a CJ-3. The rear brakes are off the shelf Bendix drum units. Probably a Bendix master cylinder too. Probably what came with the Jeep rear end.

By the way, there are several folks on the CX500 Forum who have Trident trikes.

Trident trikes were built by an outfit named MCI in the Chicago area. Don't confuse them with the Trident Trike outfit you will find by Googling. MCI is long gone.

The fairing is a Pacifico.

The Trident I have traces its lineage back to the St.Louis, MO police.
